  • Barry Zito pitched 6 innings without allowing an earned run, and Ryan Klesko hit a 3-run home run as the Giants breezed past the Phillies, 8-1. Ray Durham doubled, homered, and drove in 2 runs, and Randy Winn, Benjie Molina, and Kevin Frandsen each had 3 hits for San Francisco. Jimmy Rollins went 3-for-5 for Philadelphia.
  • James Shields allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits in 7 2/3 innings, and Carlos Pena went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles, a home run, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI as the Devil Rays stung the Royals, 4-2. John Buck hit 2 solo home runs for Kansas City.
  • Dan Uggla had 2 hits and scored 2 runs, and Miguel Cabrera tripled and drove in 2 to lead the Marlins to a 6-4 win over the Braves. Yunel Escobar doubled, homered, went 4-for-4 and scored 2 runs for Atlanta.
  • Derek Lowe took a no-hitter into the 7th inning, and Russell Martin had 2 hits, homered, and scored 2 runs as the Dodgers held off the Pirates, 6-5.
  • Paul Konerko went 3-for-4 with a home run, and Tadahito Iguchi added 3 hits as the White Sox beat the Yankees, 6-4. Jon Garland allowed just one earned run in 8 1/3 innings, and Jim Thome homered and drove in 3 for Chicago. Robinson Cano had 2 hits and 2 walks for New York.
  • Alfonso Soriano went 5-for-5 with a home run, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI, and the Cubs scored 5 times in the 7th inning to come from behind and beat the Brewers, 7-2. Prince Fielder reached base 3 times and hit his 20th home run of the season for Milwaukee.
  • Jered Weaver allowed just one run on 5 hits in 7 innings, Gary Matthews Jr. went 4-for-5 with a grand slam, and Orlando Cabrera had 4 hits, 4 runs, and 2 RBI as the Angels pummeled the Twins, 16-3. Mike Napoli, Reggie Willits, and Vladimir Guerrero also had 3 hits and 2 RBI each for Los Angeles.
  • Ichiro Suzuki doubled, homered, had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and drove in 2, and Willie Bloomquist contributed 3 more hits as the Mariners scored 4 times in the 8th inning to cap a 7-4 comeback win over the Orioles. Brian Roberts had 3 doubles and a walk for Baltimore who lost their 4th straight.
  • Mark Ellis hit for the cycle and drove in 3 runs, but it was Eric Chavez who provided the dramatics when he hit a 2-out solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the A’s a 5-4 walk-off win over the Red Sox. Dan Haren pitched another great game for Oakland, allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 9 in 7 2/3 innings. David Ortiz doubled and homered, and Wily Mo Pena had 2 hits, a home run, and 2 RBI for Boston

Albert Pujols was back to his old tricks launching a game winning 2-run homer to beat the Astros on Sunday.

 

  • Gary Sheffield homered, reached base 3 times, drove in 2 runs, and scored 3 times, and Jeremy Bonderman pitched 6 2/3 strong innings as the Tigers beat the Indians for the second straight day, 9-2. Victor Martinez had 2 hits, a home run, and 2 RBI for Cleveland.
  • Adam Lind had 2 hits, including a bases loaded double that drove in 3 runs, as the Blue Jays came from behind to defeat the White Sox, 4-3. John Danks allowed just one run over 5 innings, and Jim Thome homered and drove in 2 for Chicago.
  • Doug Davis gave up one run on 6 hits in 7 2/3 innings, and Eric Byrnes reached base 3 times and scored twice as the Diamondbacks downed the Mets 4-1 to take the series from New York. Oliver Perez allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings for the Mets.
  • Andre Ethier doubled, homered, and drove in 2 to lead the Dodgers to 3 runs in the 7th inning and 2 runs in the 8th inning on their way to a 5-4 decision over the Pirates. Adam LaRoche and Jason Bay went deep for Pittsburgh.
  • Marcus Giles had 3 hits and scored 3 runs, Terrmel Sledge doubled, reached base 4 times, and scored 2 runs, and Josh Bard homered and drove in 4 runs as the Padres upended the Diamondbacks, 7-3.
  • Aaron Rowand went 3-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI, and Ryan Howard homered and drove in 3, but it was Shane Victorino’s solo shot in the 9th inning that gave the Phillies a 9-8 walk-off victory over the Giants. Chase Utley added a double and a home run for Philadelphia while Benjie Molina collected 3 hits and a homer for San Francisco.
  • J.P. Howell allowed just one run on 5 hits over 8 innings of work, and Carlos Pena and Delmon Young each hit homers as the Devil Rays coasted to a 5-1 win over the Royals.
  • Ben Sheets pitched 6 scoreless innings, and J.J. Hardy reached base 3 times and homered yet again as the Brewers shut out the Marlins, 3-0. Kevin Mench also had 3 hits for Milwaukee. Dontrelle Willis gave up just 2 run on 7 hits in 6 innings, but he also walked 6 for Florida.
  • Albert Pujols hit 2 of the team’s 5 home runs and drove in 3 to lead the Cardinals to an 8-6 win over the Astros in 10 innings. Hunter Pence went 4-for-5 with a homer and 2 RBI for Houston.
  • Mark DeRosa hit a grand slam, and Derrek Lee and Alfonso Soriano chipped in with 3 hits and a home run each as the Cubs responded to Lou Piniella’s challenge and crushed the Braves, 10-1. Sean Marshall gave Chicago a strong outing, allowing just one run while striking out 8 over 6 2/3 innings.
  • Garrett Atkins doubled, homered, reached base 4 times, and drove in 2 runs, Brad Hawpe doubled, reached base 4 times, and drove in 3 runs, and Kazuo Matsui added 3 hits, a triple, and 3 RBI as the Rockies outlasted the Reds in a slugfest in Colorado, 10-9. Edwin Encarnacion and Norris Hopper each had 3 hits, and Brandon Phillips hit a 3-run home run for Cincinnati.
  • Ervin Santana pitched 7 strong innings, but once again it was Vladimir Guerrero’s 2-run home run in the bottom of the 9th that propelled the Angels to a 4-3 win over the Orioles. Jeremy Guthrie allowed just one earned run on 3 hits in 8 innings but goes back to Baltimore with nothing to show for it.
  • Nick Swisher reached base 3 times, and 6 Oakland pitchers managed to give up just 2 runs despite allowing 15 base runners as the A’s got to Johan Santana and beat the Twins, 4-2. Jason Kubel homered and had 3 hits for Minnesota.
  • Jose Lopez went 4-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI, and Jose Guillen went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and 3 RBI as the Mariners hammered yet another Texas pitcher on their way to an 11-6 win over the Rangers. Victor Diaz hit 2 home runs and drove in 5, and Mark Teixeira reached base 3 times, homered, and scored 3 times for Texas.
  • Five different New York hitters collected 2 hits, but none was bigger than Alex Rodriguez’ solo home run in the 9th inning off Jonathan Papelbon that gave the Yankees a 6-5 win over the Red Sox. A-Rod drove in 2 on the night. Dustin Pedroia continued to swing a hot bat, collecting 2 doubles and driving in 3 runs for Boston. Incidentally, Rodriguez is batting .467 (7-for-15) with 4 homers and 11 RBI in the 9th inning of games this season. He has also hit 20 or more homers now for 12 straight seasons.

Ivan Rodriguez busted out 4 hits, 2 doubles, and 3 RBI in Detroit's victory over Cleveland

 

  • Andruw Jones homered and drove in 2 runs, and Chuck James pitched 6 strong innings as the Braves won their third straight by beating the Cubs, 5-3. Chicago has now dropped 6 in a row.
  • Alex Rios and Aaron Hill each had 2 hits and 3 RBI, and Vernon Wells went 2-for-2 and drove in 2 runs and the Blue Jays scored 3 runs in the 7th inning and 5 in the 8th to stun the White Sox, 9-3.
  • Ruben Gotay had 3 hits, homered, drove in 3 runs, and scored twice, and Jorge Sosa allowed just one run over 6 2/3 innings as the Mets snapped Arizona’s winning streak with a 7-1 over the Diamondbacks. Carlos Delgado also had 2 hits, a home run, and scored twice for New York.
  • Mike Lowell doubled, homered, drove in 4 runs, and scored 2 others, and Dustin Pedroia and Manny Ramirez each reached base 3 times as the Red Sox bounced back to beat the Yankees, 11-6. Jorge Posada had 2 hits, a home run, and 3 RBI, and Melky Cabrera had 3 hits and a home run for New York.
  • Carlos Lee reached base 3 times, homered, and drove in 3 runs, and Hunter Pence doubled, had 2 hits, and 2 RBI as the Astros roughed up the Cardinals, 8-3. Chris Sampson pitched 8 solid innings for Houston.
  • Magglio Ordonez went 4-for-6 with a double, home run, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored, and Ivan Rodriguez went 4-for-5 with 2 doubles, and 3 RBI as the Tigers clawed past the Indians, 9-5. Grady Sizemore had 4 hits, a home run, and scored 3 runs, and Casey Blake had 3 hits, homered, and drove in 2 for Cleveland.
  • Byung-Hyun Kim pitched 6 strong innings, and Miguel Cabrera and Josh Willingham each hit home runs and drove in 2 as the Marlins swam past the Brewers, 5-2. Chris Capuano allowed just 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 10 over 7 innings for Milwaukee.
  • Ian Snell yielded one run on 6 hits in 8 innings, and Jose Bautista had 3 hits as the Pirates defeated the Dodgers, 3-1. Tony Abreu had 3 hits and 2 doubles for Los Angeles.
  • Khalil Green went 4-for-5 with 3 runs, Paul McAnulty homered, had 3 RBI, and scored 3 runs, and Rob Bowen drove in 4 runs as the Padres pummeled the Nationals, 11-3.
  • Cole Hamels pitched a complete game 5-hitter, and Ryan Howard drove in 2 runs as the Phillies flew past the Giants, 5-2.
  • Emil Brown had 3 hits, a home run, and 3 RBI, and David DeJesus had 2 hits and 2 RBI as the Royals hammered the Devil Rays, 9-4. Brendan Harris homered and drove in 3 for Tampa Bay.
  • Jeff Francis allowed just one run on 5 hits in 7 innings, and Todd Helton homered and drove in 2 runs to lead the Rockies to a 4-1 win over the Reds.
  • Mike Napoli homered, scored 3 times, drove in 2 runs, and stole a base, and Chone Figgins added 2 hits, 2 RBI, and a steal as the Angels cruised to a 7-4 win over the Orioles. Joe Saunders allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits in 6 innings for Los Angeles. Ramon Hernandez has 2 hits, a home run, and 4 RBI for Baltimore.
  • Joe Blanton pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout, and Mark Ellis and Jason Kendall each had 2 hits as the A’s nipped the Twins, 1-0. Carlos Silva was the hard luck loser. He pitched an 8 inning complete game for Minnesota, allowing just one run on 5 hits. The game just took an astonishing 1 hour and 49 minutes from start to finish.
  • Jose Guillen homered and reached base 3 times, and Yuniesky Betancourt hit a double and drove in 2 runs as the Mariners held off the Rangers, 5-4. Mark Teixeira hit a home run and drove in 2 for Texas

  • Javier Vazquez threw 8 shutout innings, and Tadahito Iguchi had 2 hits and 2 RBI as the White Sox blanked the Blue Jays, 2-0. A.J. Burnett allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 7 1/3 innings for Toronto.
  • Brian Bannister pitched 8 innings of 2 hit ball, and Emil Brown reached base 3 times as the Royals beat the Devil Rays, 4-1.
  • Jhonny Peralta had 3 hits, hit a home run, scored twice, and drove in 2 runs, and Victor Martinez homered twice and drove in 4 as the Indians edged the Tigers, 12-11, in a slugfest at Cleveland. Placido Polanco had 4 hits, scored 3 runs, and drove in 2 for Detroit.
  • Jorge Posada doubled twice and drove in 3 runs, and Robinson Cano homered, had 2 hits, 2 runs, and 2 RBI as the Yankees knocked off the Red Sox, 9-5. Manny Ramirez went 4-for-5, and David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia each had 3 hits for Boston.
  • Kyle Davies allowed just one run over 7 innings, Jeff Francoeur drove in 3 runs, and 4 Atlanta hitters collected 3 hits as the Braves knocked out 20 hits en route to an 8-5 win over the Cubs. Derrek Lee had 3 hits, a home run and 2 RBI for Chicago.

  • Cristian Guzman and Dmitri Young each had 4 hits, and Ronnie Belliard knocked in the winning run in the 10th inning as the Nationals squeaked past the Padres, 4-3. Josh Bard had 2 doubles and 4 hits for San Diego.
  • Fred Lewis went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and 3 runs scored, and Matt Morris allowed just one hit over 6 scoreless innings as the Giants shut out the Phillies, 13-0. Ray Durham also had 2 hits, a home run, and 4 RBI for San Francisco.
  • Brandon Webb was brilliant for 8 innings, and Stephen Drew hit a 3-run homer, and Chris Snyder hit a 2-run home run as the Diamondbacks won their 8th in row by defeating the Mets, 5-1. John Maine allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings but took the loss for New York.
  • Ryan Braun went 3-for-3 with a double, home run, 2 RBI, 3 runs scored, and a walk, and Kevin Mench doubled twice and drove in 4 runs as the Brewers topped the Marlins, 8-5. Hanley Ramirez had 3 hits, a home run, and 2 RBI for Florida.
  • Gary Bennett and Juan Encarnacion each hit home runs to lead the Cardinals to a 7-run 9th inning on their way to an 8-1 win over the Astros. Both starting pitchers faired well in this game. Adam Wainwright and Roy Oswalt each allowed just one run on 4 hits in 7 innings for St. Louis and Houston respectively.
  • Bobby Livingston didn’t allow an earned run in 6 2/3 innings, and Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Gonzalez each went deep as the Reds held off the Rockies, 4-2. Willy Taveras had 3 hits and a stolen base for Colorado.
  • Chone Figgins went 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored, and Gary Matthews reached base twice and drove in 2 runs as the Angels rallied to beat the Orioles, 3-2. John Lackey allowed just 2 runs in 7 1/3 innings for Los Angeles.
  • Kevin Slowey allowed just one run on 5 hits over 6 innings in his major league debut, and Jeff Cirillo drove in 2 runs as the Twins won their 5th straight by beating the A’s, 3-2. Milton Bradley had 3 hits, and Eric Chavez homered and had 2 hits for Oakland.
  • Marlon Byrd reached base 5 times, and Victor Diaz had 3 hits and drove in 2 runs as the Rangers outlasted the Mariners, 9-8. Richie Sexson had 3 hits, a home run, and 2 RBI, and Ichiro Suzuki had 2 hits, scored 3 times, stole a base, and drove in a run for Seattle.

  • Travis Hafner went 2-for-3 with a home run, 2 runs, 4 RBI, and 2 walks, and Grady Sizemore went 2-for-4 with a triple, 2 runs, 2 RBI, and a walk as the Indians beat up Justin Verlander and the Tigers, 11-5. Victor Martinez also homered and drove in 3 for Cleveland.
  • Dmitri Young went 4-for-4, and Ryan Zimmerman doubled, homered, drove in 4 runs and scored 3 as the Nationals clobbered the Dodgers, 11-4. Cristian Guzman had 3 hits and scored 3 runs as well for Washington.
  • Mike Cameron hit 2 doubles and a home run to lead the Padres to a 4-2 win over the Pirates. Greg Maddux allowed just one run in 6 1/3 innings in the win for San Diego. Meanwhile, Shawn Chacon pitched 7 scoreless innings for Pittsburgh, allowing just 3 hits while striking out 10. He didn’t figure in the decision.
  • Aaron Hill and Frank Thomas hit solo home runs, and Roy Halladay pitched 7 scoreless innings as the Blue Jays shut out the White Sox, 2-0. Mark Buehrle was the tough-luck loser for Chicago. Buehlre pitched an 8 inning complete game and allowed just 2 runs on 2 hits.
  • Orlando Hernandez pitched 7 strong innings, and Jose Reyes reached base 3 times, scored, drove in a run, and stole a base as the Mets defeated the Giants, 4-2.
