July 27, 2007 “Short Stops” Around the League

 

Jhonny Peralta hit 2 home runs and drove in 5, and Josh Barfield picked up 2 hits, drove in 2 runs, and scored 2 more as the Indians roughed up the Twins, 10-4.


Ramon Hernandez went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, and Jeremy Guthrie threw 6 strong innings as the Orioles won their 5th straight by beating the Yankees, 4-2.

Michael Bourn went 4-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base, and
Pat Burrell doubled, homered, and drove in 3 to lead the Phillies to an 8-1 win over the Pirates in a rain shortened game in Philadelphia. Jamie Moyer allowed just one run on 6 hits in 7 innings.


Tim Wakefield was solid for 6 innings, and Kevin Youkilis hit a 3-run home run as the Red Sox pounded the Tampa Bay bullpen on the way to a 7-1 win over the Devil Rays.


Bronson Arroyo did not allow an earned run through 7 2/3 innings, and Edwin Encarnacion had 2 hits, homered, and drove in 2 as the Reds survived a late inning Chicago comeback to beat the Cubs, 5-4.


Ryan Church and Brian Schneider each had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs, and Mike Bacsik baffled New York hitters for 7 innings as the Nationals topped the Mets, 6-2.


Brian Giles had 2 hits and 3 RBI, and Jake Peavy gave up just one run on 4 hits over 7 innings as the Padres beat the Astros, 9-4. Carlos Lee had 3 hits for Houston.


Corey Hart doubled, homered, had 3 hits, and drove in 2 runs, and Kevin Mench went 4-for-5 with 3 runs scored as the Brewers pummeled the Cardinals, 12-2. Bill Hall also had 3 hits and 2 RBI for Milwaukee.


Brian Bannister pitched 7 scoreless innings, Billy Butler hit a 3-run home run, and Mark Grudzielanek contributed 3 hits to lead the Royals to a convincing 6-1 victory over the Rangers.


Jermaine Dye doubled, homered, and had 3 hits, and Juan Uribe added 2 hits and 2 RBI as the White Sox rallied to beat the Blue Jays, 4-3. Reed Johnson went 4-for-5 for Toronto.

Chris Young doubled, homered, and reached base 4 times, and
Orlando Hudson and Eric Byrnes each drove in 2 runs, but it was Tony Clark’s walk-off home run in the last of the 11th inning that sent the Diamondbacks to an 8-7 win over the Braves. Julio Franco had 2 hits and 3 RBI for Atlanta.


Chone Figgins went 4-for-5 with 2 doubles, and Gary Matthews Jr. went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI as the Angels jumped all over Nate Robertson and the Tigers, 11-5. Placido Polanco went 5-for-5 with a double and a home run for Detroit in the loss.


Jose Guillen had 2 hits, homered, and drove in 2 runs, and Adrian Beltre doubled and knocked in 3 more as the Mariners ended their 7-game skid with a 7-1 win over the A’s. Felix Hernandez gave up just one run in 7 innings for Seattle.


Barry Bonds reached base 5 times, scored 2 runs, and hit career home run #754, and Pedro Feliz, Ray Durham, and Benjie Molina also went deep as the Giants outlasted the Marlins, 12-10. Hanley Ramirez doubled, homered, and had 4 RBI for Florida.
