July 20, 2007 “Short Stops” Around the League

 

Jason Marquis allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits in 7 2/3 innings, and Aramis Ramirez collected 2 hits, homered, and drove in 4 as the Cubs won their third straight by beating the Diamondbacks, 6-2. Chris Young hit his 15th home run of the season for Arizona.

Julio Lugo went 3-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBI, and Coco Crisp hit a triple and drove in 3 runs to give Josh Beckett all the support he needed to beat the White Sox, 10-3, and pick up his 13th win of the season. Jim Thome hit a 3-run homer for Chicago.


Florida’s first 3 hitters, Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, and Miguel Cabrera combined to go 8-for-14 with 4 doubles, 2 home runs, and 8 RBI as the Marlins socked the Reds, 10-2. Scott Olsen gave up just 2 runs in 7 innings for the victory.


Aaron Cook pitched 7 scoreless innings, and Todd Helton drove in 2 runs to help lead the Rockies to a 3-1 victory over the Nationals.


Roy Oswalt yielded just one run over 6 innings, and Carlos Lee provided all the offense for Houston with a 2-run home run in the 1st inning as the Astros edged the Pirates, 2-1. Tom Gorzelanny pitched 7 strong innings for Pittsburgh despite taking the loss.


Billy Butler went 4-for-4 with 4 RBI, and Mark Grudzielanek went 4-for-5 with 4 runs scored as the Royals shocked the Tigers in Detroit, 10-2. Gil Meche threw 7 strong innings, allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits.


B.J. Upton doubled and hit 2 home runs, drove in 3 runs, and scored 3 runs, and Edwin Jackson pitched 6 scoreless innings as the Devil Rays embarrassed the Yankees, 14-4. Brendan Harris reached base 4 times and drove in 2 runs, and Dioner Navarro added a grand slam for Tampa Bay.


Jose Guillen and Richie Sexson each reached base twice while Adrian Beltre homered and drove in 2 as the Mariners found a way to get by the Blue Jays, 4-2. Alex Rios had 3 hits for Toronto.


Albert Pujols doubled, homered, and walked twice, and Adam Wainwright turned in a strong 7 innings as the Cardinals upended the Braves, 4-2. Chuck James gave up just one run in 7 innings for Atlanta.


Dave Roberts and Omar Vizquel each had 3 hits, and Guillermo Rodriguez drove in 3 runs to lead the Giants over the Brewers, 8-4. Barry Bonds went 0-for-4 with a walk.


Jason Kubel went 3-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI, and Justin Morneau hit his 26th home run and drove in 3 runs as the Twins beat the Angels, 7-5. Mike Napoli had 3 hits for Los Angeles.


Victor Martinez had 3 hits, Travis Hafner homered and drove in 2 runs, and Fausto Carmona pitched 8 scoreless innings (allowing just 3 hits) as the Indians squeaked past the Rangers, 3-2.


Erik Bedard allowed just one run on one hit while striking out 11 in 7 innings, and every member of the Baltimore lineup picked up at least one base hit as the Orioles cruised to a 6-1 win over the A’s.


Ryan Howard reached base 3 times, and Chase Utley doubled, homered, and drove in 2 runs to help the Phillies defeat the Padres, 7-3.


Oliver Perez gave up just one run on 6 hits in 7 1/3 innings, and Carlos Beltran doubled and hit a 2-run, 8th inning home run as the Mets beat the Dodgers for the second straight night, 4-1. Brett Tomko pitched 6 strong innings for Los Angeles without allowing an earned run. New York’s Jose Valentin broke his right tibia when he fouled a ball off the leg. He will likely miss the rest of the season.
