  • Texas Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels announced today the club has signed the following players to contracts for the 2007 season: RHP Francisco Cruceta, RHP Frank Francisco, RHP Armando Galarraga, LHP Daniel Haigwood and LHP John Rheinecker.
  • Pirates’ pitcher Tony Armas Jr. worked out his Visa problems and is expected to arrive in camp Monday.
  • The Los Angeles Dodgers and catcher Kelly Stinnett agreed to a minor league contract Sunday.
  • Jered Weaver, who went 11-2 as a rookie last season, has tendinitis in his biceps and will be limited early in spring training.
  • Newsday reports that when the Mets players split into groups for PFP (pitchers' fielding practice) yesterday morning, the A-list squad consisted of Tom Glavine, Orlando Hernandez, Oliver Perez, John Maine and (drum roll, please) Mike Pelfrey. Hmmm…
  • Cubs general manager Jim Hendry was expected to talk to Carlos Zambrano's agent late Sunday regarding a new deal for the pitcher. Zambrano’s arbitration case is scheduled for this Tuesday.
  • Josh Johnson, shut down at the end of last season due to forearm discomfort, is still not throwing in camp and the Marlins are intent on being very cautious with him, the team's website reports.
  • Nick Swisher reported to camp at 220 pounds. And it's not a fat 220. Apparently Swisher worked out in a barn this off-season shoveling, busting up concrete, and chopping trees. Whatever gets the job done I suppose.
  • Anibal Sanchez was on the mound today and threw a 10-minute bullpen session, claiming his arm felt much better.
  • Dodgers’ pitcher Brett Tomko made his intention to start known to everyone on Sunday. The LA staff is quite crowded so it will be tough for Tomko to crack the top five.
  • Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia made it clear over the weekend that he plans to use Darren Oliver as a short reliever and left-handed specialist rather than a long man.
  • Tigers’ 2006 first-round draft pick, Andrew Miller, is drawing rave reviews in his first camp at Detroit’s facility in Lakeland, Florida.
  • Giants’ pitcher Matt Morris is in camp and appears fully recovered from cracked ribs that plagued his 2006 season.

  • Joe Maddon, Manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Scott Kazmir and Casey Fossum’s rehab…

Joe Maddon (JM): Scotty’s done real well. I watched him throw yesterday and I watched Casey throw. Not yesterday, but the day before that. Both guys threw easily, the ball came out of their hand well. They both felt good afterward. I think at this point Kaz is probably further along than Casey is, however Casey is doing very well. We anticipate a high probability that Casey will be well to pitch the opening of the season.

On Akinori Iwamura’s position

JM: We’re going to start him at third base to get him comfortable right now, then we’ll see. We’re not excluding the fact that he may move somewhere else, but right now I think it’s wise to have Aki come in here in a comfortable situation. We’d like to put him in a comfort zone and then see what happens. My take on him is that he already is. He seems to adapt really quickly, he’s a very bright young man and I think he likes this a lot. We want to keep him as comfortable as possible, and after all he was a six-time gold glove third baseman.

On BJ Upton

JM: BJ is not going to be impacted by anybody. We’re going to give BJ the opportunity to play several different positions. Our primary goal with him is to really re-establish his offense. With that we’re going to try to de-emphasize the pressure I feel we put on him in the past at one particular defensive position. Eventually he’s going to show us the right position. He was kind of fast-tracked here and I think we maybe put some undue pressures on this young man. I want to reduce them at this point, let him learn how to be a major league baseball player. He will tell us what his best position is by how he reacts on the field. But primarily we want to see him hit like we know that he can.

  • Masumi Kuwata threw his first official bullpen session for the Pirates on Saturday, with Ryan Doumit doing the catching.
  • All 36 Cincinnati Reds pitchers and catchers were expected to report by midnight tonight...a short workout for pitchers and catchers will be held at approximately 12:30 p.m. tomorrow, following physical examinations.
  • Florida Marlins pitchers and catchers, and new manager Fredi Gonzalez, will take the field for the first time this spring, at 10 am on Sunday.
  • The Washington Nationals today announced that Nationals Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Player Development Bob Boone has accepted the resignation of Andy Dunn, Nationals Director of Player Development.
