• The Mariners announced that left-handed pitcher Cesar Jimenez has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in the olecranon (the tip) of his left elbow. Jimenez was injured pitching on Wednesday, March 7 against the San Francisco Giants. Jimenez has opted for surgery to help speed the healing process.
  • Righthanded pitchers Edgar Martinez and David Pauley were optioned by the Red Sox to Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League. Three non-roster invitees, infielders Luis Jimenez and Chad Spann, and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, were assigned to Boston’s minor league camp. In addition, non-roster righthanded pitcher Adam Bernero, who underwent ligament reconstruction surgery on his right elbow on February 28, has reported to the minor league camp to begin his rehab.

  • The Washington Nationals today renewed the contract of third baseman Ryan Zimmerman for the 2007 season. Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.“Ryan is an integral part of the future of our franchise,” said Bowden. “He is not eligible for free agency until after the 2011 season.  We will continue to work with Ryan and his representatives to secure a long-term contract long before his free agency.”
