I know that BDD focuses on baseball in its purest form, but I'm also aware that many of our readers (and writers!) also play fantasy games such as Rotisserie. Since we didn't do the division-by-division fantasy preview this year, and so many drafts and auctions are this weekend, here's a quick peek at some players which are over- and under-rated by popular opinion this spring. more »

BDD Talk Radio (Special Edition)
I had the opportunity today to speak with one of my favorite journalists in the game...Jamey Newberg of The Newberg Report. Jamey is well known for his fabulous coverage of the Texas Rangers, his daily newsletters, and his annual bound edition of the Rangers year in review. The Newberg Report has a tremendous following that even gathers together once a year at the Ballpark in Arlington to celebrate the team they love.
Today in this pre-recorded special edition of BDD Talk Radio, Jamey talks about the season that was, the job Jon Daniels is doing, and what we can expect to see in the near future deep in the heart of Texas. Click on the link below to listen to the show.
Co-host Craig Brown and I have had some fantastic guests over the past several weeks including A.J. Hinch, Director of Player Development for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers GM Jon Daniels, Tampa Bay Devil Rays Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Gerry Hunsicker, Kansas City Royals GM Dayton Moore, and a variety of star bloggers and reporters from around the web. You can listen to an archive or download a show by clicking on the button above. You can also subscribe to the podcast via iTunes.

Thank you to all who have donated!!! It is greatly appreciated.
As most of you know, a few times a year I run a little donation drive to help us cover some of the costs at BDD. I honestly don't like doing this, but every little bit helps. This year, more than ever, I'm asking for support. The annual cost for stats is now over $2,000, and that doesn't include any programming or modifications needed on the site.
So if you enjoy the tracker, articles, news updates, minor league analysis, and everything else we do (for free!), we would be extremely grateful if you could donate whatever you're able. We will accept donations through PayPal or by check or money order. Instructions are below.
PayPal PayPal donations can be made by using any credit card or bank account. Visit PayPal.com, sign in or setup a new account, and "Send Money" to joechris96@aol.com

You guys are really too much. You won't let me take it easy, will you?? I feel like a yo-yo bouncing back and forth! :)
Thanks to all those who responded to my email about the future of Baseball Digest Daily. It certainly stirred things up among the staff here! After tossing ideas and thoughts around a bit, I want to provide a quick update on where BDD stands. Several people have offered up some funding to help pay for the site. The offers, along with member donations (which I'll solicit later), will essentially pay for the stats and the site's blog upgrade. Blog Harbor is in a bit of a mess (but I'll talk about that later). The radio show is taking off big time, and our exposure is growing very rapidly. Over the past days, I've outlined some points and reviewed some suggestions from key members of the team. It became apparent that we should be able to continue most of BDD's activities. Here's the general plan. 1) The site will maintain all its current features (including the Tracker), but I will eliminate the top 10 and top 100 minor league lists because, frankly, they're too time consuming to update regularly. The home page will also undergo a facelift. 2) Regular news alerts will continue and general emails will be sent out, but there will be NO daily newsletter. The newsletter just sucks up too much time. 3) The Blog Talk Radio show will go on, and we'll try to rotate in some new hosts while continuing to add entertaining guests. 4) The current Blog Harbor platform will be upgraded. Hopefully everyone will participate with regular comments on the blog going forward! 5) I have chosen to downsize our team of writers so that we can better control our output and stick to a regular weekly schedule of articles. From time to time we will publish work from guest writers, but for the most part, there will be a steady stream of content from the people you've come to know. Bottom line is this...we have a good thing going here. If we can just break even on the costs, or at least come close, things will be much easier, especially with this new format I've outlined above. I want to simplify this process while still putting out a quality product. With the right people I still think we can do that. Thanks! Thursday, September 6

I received this very interesting newsletter/press release from Imagine Sports, the owners of Diamond Mind Baseball who purchased a stake in the company from Tom Tippett. I guess this is good for the Diamond Mind player, but MLBAM just gets bigger and bigger by the minute.

If you missed our interview with Kansas City Royals GM Dayton Moore this morning, do yourself a favor and check it out! It’s really good stuff. Head on over to Blog Talk Radio and listen online or download the podcast…I hope all you guys out there realize now that there’s no such thing as a jinx…especially in Many people have asked why we are downsizing BDD so I figured I’d address the topic briefly. There are 3 main reasons…1) Lack of time, 2) Cost, and 3) Not enough regular article contributions. I realize the newsletter is a great resource for many people, but it takes an enormous amount of time that I just don’t have anymore. The player tracker is very popular, but the cost of our stats feed (and programming) is approximately $2,500 per season. I just can’t pay that bill anymore. If someone wants to sponsor our site or generate a fund raiser to bring in the necessary dollars, I’ll be happy to continue the player tracker. And finally, while we’ve had a number of top notch article contributions, we have not had enough regular stand-alone contributions that don’t require editing. And again, either time or money comes into play when we talk about editing articles. So there you have it. Thanks and have a great holiday weekend everyone! Saturday, July 7

I'd like to take a moment to introduce the newest member of BDD, Ed Lilly! Ed Lilly lives in Medford, New Jersey where he and his wife Jane own an Insurance Agency. They have two daughters, ages 18 and 11. He is a lifelong fan (more than 40 years) of the Philadelphia Phillies so therefore he is used to heartache and disappointment. He is a big fan of minor league baseball with affiliates of the Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and two independent teams within an hour of his home. Ed enjoys the sabermetric side of the game and looks to the numbers for answers. He promises to write with a sense of humor and look for the lighter side of the game while hopefully providing insights from a fans perspective. Welcome Ed!

The Readers Have Spoken! Beginning July 1st, we will revive the daily newsletter information...but this time, it will be available only on the site. Additional information on where to find the daily report will follow next week. Recaps, scores, probable pitchers, the previous night's home runs, and Who's Hot and Who's Not will make an attempt to come out of retirement for those of you begging for the information! The only twist is that you'll have to visit BDD to get your fix. College World Series Game One Recap Under normal circumstances, I would have posted this article during the course of the game with additional analysis and commentary. Unfortunately, NCAA regulations do not permit simultaneous reporting. Therefore, I present this inning-by-inning recap as my post-game analysis of game one of the College World Series Finals...Charting the Game: CWS Finals Game 1 Coming Soon For those of you that aren't interested in the College World Series, we'll return our focus to professional baseball on Tuesday. Look for Nate's articles on the American League rookies. Steve will continue with his MLB weekend previews. And Dean shifts his attention from college baseball to the minor leagues. We also have a few interviews in the works. Look for the transcript from my interview with New York Yankees prospect, Brett Smith, later today. Call for Writers We're once again looking for enthusiastic, polished writers who are able to contribute at least one or two articles per week to BDD. Applicants must have a strong command of the English language and be able to edit his or her own work. These are non-paying positions, but they do offer some perks...various media credentials, interviews with professional baseball players, media guides, insider reports, etc...to name a few. Several members of BDD have gained valuable experience on their way to much bigger jobs within the business of baseball. If you think you have what it takes, please email me at info@baseballdigestdaily.com and provide your name, email address, phone number, a brief description of why you want to write for BDD, and more importantly, reasons why we should hire you. Previous applicants are welcome to apply again.

This is a fantasy baseball post, so please move along if that's not your bag.
I was fairly optimistic about my team in the "Blog Battle 2007" this year, as posted here. Yet, I'm off to a very slow start, with few reasons to expect that I'll be able to catch the mastermind who picked A-Rod and Rollins as his first two picks, and got Magglio Ordonez in the 7th, and Rich Hill in the 10th round. I gotta tip my cap to a guy who drafts B.J. Ryan and still dominates a league of experts. I am a bit surprised at how few moves most of the other owners are making. I was expecting a much more active league, with the criteria for entry being at least frequent blog writing, with many of the managers owning their own blogs. At least only two DL'd players have been left on "active" rosters recently... Garret Anderson and Iwamura. And most of the players who seem likely to get saves get gobbled up quickly, which shows that at least some of the managers are paying attention. I'm surely going to be embarrassed if I finish behind a ghost team, let me tell you! :> So, what's happened to leave the "Digested Daily" team in 10th place among the 16 teams after about a month? 1. Mark Teixeira - Um, this isn't looking like such a hot #1 pick any more. His career pace for 29 games is .280-6-21, with 18 runs scored. He's nowhere near those numbers so far, and it's hurting me. I'm dead last in RBI. I'd have about 6 more points (mostly in RBI) if Teixeira had matched his career pace so far. Sadly, that would still leave me in 10th place. 2. Catchers - I cannot seem to get these right. I knew that Montero was very high risk, and that it would be very likely I'd end up cutting him. But I figured with Laird, I'd have the position covered until I figured out what Arizona was going to do with Montero. Laird was awful, and I ended up cutting him, too, when someone else cut Pierzynski, who I had rated higher pre-season anyway. Both were anemic at the plate, so I figured I'd go with the pre-season favorite. He's hit .235-5-2-2 for me, so I am guardedly optimistic here. I even picked up Brad Ausmus for a game last week, being a firm believer in the power of Eric Milton to make a hitter look good. 3. Mets starters vs Philly - Maine was my first pickup, back on March 14. I started him in his 2nd start of the year, against Philly. And then I dropped him after he got hammered. Of course, he's been great since then, and I'm really kicking myself, since I knew he'd be a valuable pitcher. I picked Oliver Perez up off waivers after he seemed to have things together. I figured that the Phillies best hitters are both lefties, and so I felt confident starting him against them. It doesn't matter much which side the guys hit from when OP walks 7 hitters, and I gave up on him (these shallow leagues don't allow much patience - there are always other quality players out there). Suffice it to say that I'm going to be hesitant to start a Met against the Phillies again anytime soon! 4. Shortstops and Third-basemen - Whew! I thought these would be two of the strongest positions on my team. Billy Hall, Edwin Encarnacion, and Jhonny Peralta. I ended up cutting both EE and Peralta. I was able to get Peralta back after he heated up again. I still have Freel, who can play 3b, and I picked up Kelly Johnson to play second if he does. 5. Chris Young - I really needed to draft another solid OF until Young got himself established. I expected a slow start, but this has been crazy bad. I'm stubborn, so he's still on the roster, but I haven't given him many AB. 6. Chad Cordero - I am very surprised at how poorly he's pitched. I didn't expect 40 saves, but he should have 2 more, and be on a pace for 30. 7. Other waiver wire mistakes - I managed to get Chad Gaudin's worst start on my roster. Ditto David Wells. I got an 0-for-4 from Aurilia, and 1-for-6 from Gregg Zaun. Matt Lindstrom had a 9.00 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP in 2 innings for me. Mike Cameron was cut, and I jumped all over him... only to get a .190 average and little else from him in 42 AB. 8. David Bush - I had such high hopes for this guy. I thought getting him in round 12 was a steal. So far, all that's been stolen are my standing points in ERA. What's gone right? Well, Matt Holliday in the 2nd is looking strong. Lofton's BA isn't that good, but 11 SB is still great for a guy I got in the next-to-last round of the draft. Jose Valverde fell to me in round 11, and assuming he can keep his job (1.85 WHIP?!), he's racking up the saves and K's. I was hoping for 2 of 3 of Harden, Chris Young, and Frank Thomas to do well. If Harden comes back, I will have that, and - as noted - I still haven't given up on Young. Thomas hasn't been special, but he's been stable. I was able to get Kelly Johnson and Jason Frasor on the waiver wire. How could the season turn around? Well, here's my current "depth chart", keeping in mind that only 9 hitters and 7 pitchers can be active: C: Pierzynski 1b: Teixeira 2b: K.Johnson 3b: B.Hall ss: Peralta of: Holliday of: Lofton (C.Young) of: Freel (Victorino) ut: Thomas sp: Sheets, (Harden-DL), Bush, Escobar, (Hughes-DL), (Maddux) rp: C.Cordero, Putz, Valverde, Frasor, (F.Cabrera) Even though Runs and SB are the only offensive categories I'm doing well in, I'm glad to have extra speed guys for now. It's usually very tough to add steals. I'm going to need to figure out how to translate one of the three (Lofton, Freel, Victorino) into a power bat. Billy Butler is now available, and I'll be putting in a claim for him, although I dropped to the bottom of the waiver queue by picking up Hughes. Honestly, I think I could pull into contention (although I am not sure that Team A-Rod has anything to worry about for the #1 spot) if I can get 1 more power bat, and if Harden comes back and pitches strongly. I expect Hall and Thomas to pick up their power production a bit, and Teixeira will hit unless he's seriously injured and hiding it. Any suggestions? Sunday, April 29

BDD is looking to add a few additional writers. While the positions are non-paying, they do offer some nice perks. You often get the chance to attend professional baseball games as "working media," interview players and executives, receive team press releases and free review copies of books and media guides, and get even closer to the game we all love. If you are seriously interested in writing for BDD (about 2 articles per week), please email info@baseballdigestdaily.com. I will be reviewing the candidates and contacting individuals directly with further information. Preference will be given to those who have some writing experience (on other baseball sites, blogs, etc.) Thanks! Joe Tuesday, April 10

Several sources (ESPN, Boston Herald, AP) are reporting that IN Demand will offer to match the terms of DirecTV's $700 million, seven-year deal with Major League Baseball on behalf its owners, who are affiliates of the companies that own Time Warner, Comcast and Cox cable systems.
So maybe the fans will win out after all with baseball staying on cable. This may end up a good deal for everyone. |
