View Article  Minor Notes: Wieters debuts with Bowie; Hamilton to GCL-Tigers; Angles' Pettit back from broken foot
The Bowie Baysox confirmed a Baltimore Sun report that Orioles top prospect Matt Wieters was added to their roster on Friday. Bowie's Friday night game against the Altoona Curve was rained out, so Wieters will make his Eastern League debut during a doubleheader on Saturday.


Tigers right-hander prospect Brandon Hamilton was demoted from Low-A West Michigan to the GCL-Tigers. Detroit’s tenth-ranked prospect according to Baseball America had a 2.12 WHIP and 8.49 BB/9 in 29.7 innings in the Midwest League.


Angles right field prospect Chris Pettit returns tonight to Double-A Arkansas line up following rehabilitation from broken foot he suffered during the season's first game. The Angles 19th-ranked prospect according to Baseball America had a .949 OPS in 493 at bats with Low-A Cedar Rapids and High-A Rancho Cucamonga last year.
View Article  Minor Notes: O's to promote Wieters to Double-A

Baltimore Sun reporter Jeff Zrebiec is reporting that the Orioles are expected to promote the organization's top prospect Matt Wieters to Double-A Bowie.

Wieters, likely the top catching prospect in baseball, leads the Carolina League in homeruns (14), on base percentage (.448), and is second in OPS (1.008).

Rays left-hander prospect Jake McGee was placed on the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits' disabled list after leaving his start on Sunday with foreman soreness. In June, Tampa Bay's third-ranked prospect's strikeout rate has fallen and his walk rate has jumped in June follow a quick start this year.  


The Cubs promoted right-hander prospect Jeff Samardzija to Triple-A Iowa. Samardzija, the Cubs' eight-ranked prospect according to Baseball America, had a 1.54 WHIP and walked 5.11 batters per nine innings at Double-A Tennessee.


Yankees right-hander prospect Kevin Whelan was placed on Double-A Trenton's disabled list with a sore shoulder that has bothered him since the beginning of the season. The Yankees' 15th-ranked prospect by Baseball America was promoted to Trenton from High-Tampa on June 16.


Athletics right-hander prospect Craig Italiano was promoted from Low-A Kane County to High-A Stockton. Oakland's 30th-ranked prospect by Baseball America had a 10.16 K/9 and a Midwest League-leading 1.16 ERA through 70 innings.

Baseball Digest Daily's own Matt LaPorta returned to Double-A Huntsville's line up on Thursday after running into the right field wall and leaving the Sounds' game on Tuesday. On Friday, LaPorta, the Brewer's top prospect according to Baseball America, left the team to be with his ailing grandfather. He’s expected back on Tuesday. Our thoughts are with Matt and his family.

Nationals first base prospect Chris Marrero was placed on the disabled list with an injury to his right ankle. Marrero, Washington's top prospect according to Baseball America, injured the ankle while sliding into home plate during Wednesday's game against the Winston-Salem Warthogs. There's speculation that he could be done for the season.

Diamondbacks right-hander prospect Max Scherzer was placed on Triple-A Tucson's disabled list with right shoulder inflammation and fatigue. The time frame for Scherzer’s recovery is unclear. The fourth-ranked prospect by Baseball America retired all 13 batters he faced in his major league debut, but was optioned to Tuscon on June 13 when the Diamondback's needed bullpen help.

The Rangers called up catching prospect Max Ramirez to replace Gerald Laird was placed on the 15-day disabled list after pulling his right hamstring on Friday night. Ramirez, the Rangers’ 23rd-ranked prospect by Baseball America, is leading the Texas League with a 1.079 OPS and 16 home runs.

Cubs closer prospect Jose Ceda was promoted to Double-A Tennessee. Ceda, Chicago’s fourth-ranked prospect by Baseball America, became the Smokie’s closer and has six strikeouts in 3.3 innings.

Phillies center field prospect Greg Golson went on the disabled list due to a strained left wrist. Philadelphia's seventh-ranked prospect by Baseball America has 17 steals for Double-A Reading, but is leading the Eastern League with 77 strikeouts.

In his first start since May, Orioles right-hander prospect Pedro Beato pitched five scoreless innings for the Rookie GCL Orioles. Baltimore's ninth-ranked prospect according to Baseball America had been suffering from a sore right shoulder.

Cleveland right-hander prospect Tony Sipp made this first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery in July 2007. The Indians’ 12th-ranked prospect according to Baseball America had struck out one and walked one in one inning with the GCL Indians.

Other Prospect Moves:
Right-hander Evan Meek (#19 Pirates prospect, BA) was promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Right-hander Mario Alvarez (#21 Dodgers prospect, BA) was placed on the disabled list with a sore right elbow for the second time this month.

Left-hander Dustin Richardson (#22 Red Sox prospect, BA) was placed on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis. Richard should be out for a week and then pitch occasionally for two to three weeks.

Left-hander Steve Hammond (#23 Brewers prospect, BA) was promoted to Double-A Nashville and is expected to make his first start on Sunday.

Left-hander Dusty Hughes (#28 Royals prospect, BA) was promoted to Triple-A Omaha.
View Article  Minor Notes: A's Cahill Second Youngest Pitcher at AA; Two First-Rounders Sign; Buffalo's Snyder Scratched After Bump

The Athletics promoted right-hander Trevor Cahill from High-A Stockton to Double-A Midland of the Texas League. Cahill, Oakland's second-best prospect according to Baseball America, had a 2.07 PERA and a 10.6 K/9 in 87.3 innings in the California League.


The Blue Jays signed first baseman David Cooper, Toronto's top pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, to a contract and assigned him to Auburn of the New York-Penn League. Cooper, the 17th overall pick, got a $1.5 million bonus.


The Indians signed third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall, their top pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, to a contract and assigned him to short-season Class A Mahoning Valley. Chisenhall, the 29th overall pick, got a signing bonus of $1.2 million.


Indians center field prospect Brad Snyder did not play last night after hitting his head on a concrete overhang in the Triple-A Buffalo Bison’s clubhouse tunnel. The Tribe’s 25th-best prospect according to Baseball America is having a disappointing year (.246 EqA in 195 AB). In the 2008 Rule 5 Draft, the Tribe protected Snyder rather than left fielder Brian Barton, who is now a fourth outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Twins signed 2008 first-round draft pick Aaron Hicks. Hicks, the 14th overall pick in the draft, will receive a signing bonus of about $1.78 million and reported to Low A Beloit.

The Mets signed 2008 first-round draft pick Reese Havens. Havens, the 22nd overall pick in the draft, will play shortstop for the Mets short-season A team in Brooklyn and is likely to get a roughly $1.4 million signing bonus.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting right-hander Jeff Manship and third baseman Danny Valencia are among the players likely to be promoted to Double-A New Britain following the Florida State League All-Star Game. Manship is the ninth-best prospect in the Twins organization according to Baseball America and Valencia is the 22nd-best.

Twins shortstop prospect Trevor Plouffe was promoted to Triple-A Rochester. Minnesota's 10th-best prospect according to Baseball America turns 22 years old on Sunday, June 15.

Nationals right-hander prospect Adrian Alaniz will make his Double-A debut tonight if the game between the Harrisburg Senators and Bowie Baysox is not rained out. Alaniz and right-handed closer prospect Adam Carr were promoted from High-A Potomac on Friday.

Angles right-hander prospect Jeremy Haynes made his High-A debut on Friday. Haynes, the Angles 23rd-best prospect according to Baseball America, struggled with wildness through three innings.

Braves right field prospect Jason Heyward returned to the Rome Braves' line-up on Tuesday. The Braves' second-best prospect according to Baseball America had been out with right knee and shoulder injuries since June 5.


Orioles Right-hander prospect Chorye Spoone will return from the disabled list tonight and start the back end of doubleheader against the Double-A Reading Phillies. The Orioles eighth-ranked prospect according to Baseball America, had been unavailable since April 21 with bicep tendinitis.


The Twins signed 2008 First-Year Player Draft second round pick Tyler Ladendorf, an infielder from Howard College, and the Royals sign second rounder Johnny Giavotella, a second baseman from the University of New Orleans.

Braves right field prospect Jason Heyward (#2 Braves prospect, Baseball America) got inconclusive results from an MRI on Friday and he will undergo further tests of his right shoulder and right knee. Heyward hasn't played since June 5.


Right-hander Clayton Mortensen became the first 2007 draftee to reach Triple-A when he was promoted to the Cardinals affiliate in Memphis. (N.B., 2007 draftee Ross Detwiler pitched out of the bullpen for Nationals late last year.) In May, the Cardinals eight-ranked prospect (BA) had a 1.64 WHIP and 1.42 HR/9 in 31.7 innings with Double-A Springfield of the Texas League.
Tigers left field prospect Wilkin Ramirez (#14 Detroit prospect, BA) was promoted to the Triple-A Toledo Mudhens following an organizational shuffle that began with an injury to Ramon Santiago. Ramirez had an impressive .291 EqA with Double-A Erie of the Eastern League, but he also lead the league with 70 strikeouts (31.5% K/PA).
New Britain Rock Cats utility infielder/outfielder Luke Hughes will be out until at least June 20 with a groin strain. Hughes wasn’t on the Twins’ prospect radar coming into the season, but the 23-year-old has attracted attention with a .333 EqA (second in the Eastern League) and a Bondsish 6% HR/PA (215 PA).
