Dave Roberts had 3 hits, and Russell Branyan drove in 2 runs, but the real story today was San Diego's starter Chris Young. Young pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just 4 hits while striking out 9. St. Louis' lone run came on a pinch-hit home run off the bat of So Taguchi. San Diego wins game 3, 3-1. Both teams are back at it again tomorrow in game 4 with Chris Carpenter on the mound for St. Louis and Woody Williams toeing the rubber for San Diego.
Quotes from Game 3 of the NL Division Series between San Diego and St. Louis
Q. Boch, just kind of expand on the pitching there about Chris Young, especially after the top of the first, when looked like you had some momentum. They kind of took it back. But for Young to put up zeros, how big that was for the ball club?
BRUCE BOCHY: It was huge. You know, first inning, that's a tough start for us, have a runner on third, nobody out and couldn't get a run in. They ran another great pick-off on us. But Chris went out there and did what we needed. He put zeros on the board. And he's had a great year for us. And he continued today with the way he threw the ball. That's a tough lineup. And you know, just something about how he's pitched on the road, but also at home. We have all the confidence in the world in this kid. And it's been a pleasure watching him pitch all year and to watch how he threw today. It's just indicative of how he's pitched all year and kept us in the game.

Kenny Rogers pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just 5 hits, and Curtis Granderson homered and drove in 2 runs to lead the Tigers to a 6-0 shutout of the Yankees and 2 games to 1 lead in the best of 5 division series. Detroit jumped all over Randy Johnson for 5 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 2/3 innings. The Yankees offense didn't fare much better as New York's 3-4-5 hitters (Bobby Abreu, Alex Rodriguez, and Jason Giambi) went 0-for-10 with 3 strikeouts. The Tigers look to wrap up the series on Saturday when Jeremy Bonderman faces Jaret Wright.
Quotes from Game 3 of the AL Division Series between New York and Detroit Q. The Yankees have not scored for 14 consecutive innings. As good as your pitching can be, does that exceed reasonable expectations? JIM LEYLAND: Why did you have to bring that up? (Laughter.) Obviously we made some good pitches. I think if the game went on, the Yankees, in my opinion, are the most patient hitting team in baseball. And it's also one of the reasons they are the best-hitting team. As the game went on tonight and we added on a couple of runs, it was really the first time that they became a little bit impatient. But I can promise you, that won't happen tomorrow. It will be a whole new chapter tomorrow. It was just one of those nights where, you know, maybe toward the end, they got a little frustrated, but that will not happen at the beginning of tomorrow's game, I can promise you that. Q. Obviously, this was a very different Kenny Rogers tonight than the one you had. JOE TORRE: Well, not necessarily. He pitched a hell of a game tonight. I mean, you know, he didn't do well consistently for us; doesn't mean he didn't pitch any good games. Kenny Rogers, he's pitched for a long time and there's a reason for it. You know, he was on aroll tonight. He kept us off-balance, moved the ball around, changed speeds. And you could see the fire at the end there with him. He just, you know, he wanted to finish it himself. Q. Have you given any consideration about bringing Wang back? I know you sent him ahead, but does that factor in at all given where you're at now? JOE TORRE: We didn't send him ahead. We just left him home. No. This young man hasn't pitched this many innings and I'm not about to mess with his future. No, we have to deal with the people we have here. You know, we just need to win two games. |
