According to the New York Post, pitcher Mike Mussina has told friends that the New York Mets would be a welcome option if the Yankees don't want him back. And the Mets likely will be interested in the former Oriole if he becomes a free agent.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the Texas Rangers will interview Art Howe for the bench coach spot. Howe, who managed three playoff teams to the in 14 major league seasons, was recently hired by Philadelphia to coach third base, but the Phillies granted the Rangers permission to speak with him about a taking a step up the coaching chain.
Minnesota Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano had surgery on his left elbow Monday. The team said the procedure, performed in southern California by Dr. Lewis Yocum, with assistance from Twins physician Dr. John Steubs, took about 90 minutes and went without any complications. Liriano will miss the entire 2007 season as he rehabilitates from the ligament transplant procedure.
Carlos Delgado is so happy with the Mets that he doesn't want to leave New York. Delgado decided against filing a trade demand, the Mets said Monday, preferring to stick with the team that took him to the playoffs for the first time in his big league career. As a veteran traded during a multiyear contract, Delgado can file for a trade demand through Saturday.
The Rangers have exercised a 2007 club option for $1.2 million on left-handed reliever Ron Mahay instead of a $250,000 buyout.
