News and Notes Javelina IF Kevin Kouzmanoff was traded yesterday to the San Diego Padres with minor league pitcher RHP Andrew Brown for 2B Josh Barfield. Kouzmanoff will remain a member of the Javelinas for the duration of the Fall League but will be donning a Padre uniform … Scorpion RHP Billy Sadler (SF) went another 1.2 innings without allowing an earned run. - The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has acquired 2B Josh Barfield from the San Diego Padres in exchange for INF Kevin Kouzmanoff & RHP Andrew Brown
- According to the San Diego Tribute, the Padres have decided to make Angels pitching coach Bud Black their new manager. Black will be apparently be introduced at the team's awards banquet Thursday night. (Still waiting on the release for this one) - The San Diego Padres announced today the club has picked up Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers’ option for the 2008 season. Padres Chief Executive Officer Sandy Alderson made the announcement. - The San Diego Padres today agreed to terms on minor league contracts with left-handed pitchers Frank Brooks, Erick Burke, Adrian Burnside and Mike Johnston, right-handed pitchers Jack Cassel and Steve Watkins, third baseman Royce Huffman, first baseman Brian Myrow and center fielder Adam Shabala. Except for Johnston, who is recovering from October surgery to repair his labrum (left), all players were also extended invitations to Major League Spring Training. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement. - The Chicago Cubs today announced that former first baseman and outfielder Gerald Perry has agreed to a two-year deal to become the Major League club’s hitting coach. Perry, 46, has been a Major League hitting coach for seven seasons, including last year with the American League West Division champion Oakland Athletics. Perry helped the A’s rebound from a .243 team batting average in the first half to post a .279 batting average in the second half, fifth-best in baseball. Under his guidance, the A’s finished second in the AL with 650 free passes – it marked the fourth time in which Perry helped an offense rank first or second in the league in walks (also 2000-2002 with Seattle). From 2003-2005, Perry was the hitting coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his first season in the position, the team batting average improved 23 points from .244 (lowest in the NL) in 2002 to a .267 mark and a third place ranking in the National League in 2003. - River Cats President, General Manager & COO Alan Ledford has been named 2006 Minor League Baseball Executive of the Year by Baseball America, club officials announced today. The award, given annually to the Minor League Baseball executive who uses creative and innovative means to create a successful business model, is voted on by members of the Baseball America editorial staff with input from others around Minor League Baseball. Ledford will formally accept the honor at an awards presentation during this December’s Baseball Winter Meetings in Orlando, FL. - The Texas Rangers announced today that they have signed INF/OF Matt Kata to a minor league contract with an invite to the club’s major league spring training camp. Kata, 28, spent the 2006 season with Louisville, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. He batted .263 (87-331) with 45 runs, 20 doubles, four triples, nine home runs and 34 RBI in 113 games. He made 70 starts in the outfield and 32 starts in the infield. Kata ranked 12th in the International League batting .342 (26-76) in the month of June, raising his batting average to a season-high .296. Kata He is currently playing for Mayos de Navojoa in the Mexican Winter League, batting .232 (23-99) with four home runs and 13 RBI in 24 games. |
