The A's decided to offer Barry Zito arbitration on Friday, according to a source. The team did not offer it to Jay Payton. No surprise here as Oakland wants to insure it gets a first round pick for the southpaw who is certain to sign elsewhere.

The last day to offer arbitration to players who became free agents IS TODAY. Teams can offer salary arbitration to their free agents by December 1st (under the new CBA, the date was pushed up a week). By making the offer, two things can occur. First, the player can accept or decline. Second, just by offering arbitration the team assures itself of draft pick compensation if the player signs elsewhere. As teams decide what to do, we will bring the information to you.
