I will be leaving very early tomorrow morning for Spring Training in Arizona. Therefore, there will be no newsletter this evening. However, I am sure I'll have a ton to write about during my trip. View Article  March 3rd "Short Stops" Around the League

Greg Dobbs collected 4 hits and 4 RBI, and Michael Bourn added 3 hits and 2 RBI to lead the Phillies to a 12-9 win over the Red Sox. Jonathan Papelbon pitched 2 scoreless innings for Boston, striking out 4.


Mike Rose went 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored and David Dellucci drove in 3 as the Indians trounced the Tigers, 11-2.

Johnny Gomes hit 2 home runs and drove in 3 to get
Scott Kazmir (1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 HR, 3 R) off the hook and help the Devil Rays to a 5-4 rain shortened victory over the Blue Jays.


Jorge Posada homered and the Yankees scored 3 times in the 8th inning to come from behind and beat the Pirates, 5-4.


Gavin Floyd allowed just one run on 2 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings, and Jermaine Dye hit his first home run of the spring as the White Sox nipped the Diamondbacks, 6-5.


Michael Barrett doubled and homered for the Cubs while Nick Swisher drove in 2 for the Athletics as Chicago and Oakland played to a 5-5, 10 inning tie.

Termel Sledge homered for the lone run of the game to lead the Padres to a 1-0 shutout of the Mariners.


Sammy Sosa picked up his first hit as a member of the Rangers, and Hank Blalock added 2 hits and an RBI as Texas defeated Kansas City, 8-5. Odalis Perez gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in just 1 1/3 innings.


Carlos Lee had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs, and Jason Jennings pitched 2 scoreless innings in his Houston debut as the Astros downed the Braves, 6-1.

Josh Hamilton, Jeff Keppinger, and Paul Janish all picked up 3 hits in the Reds 14-1 thrashing of
Boof Bonser and the Twins.


Kip Wells pitched 2 scoreless innings starting for the Cardinals, and John Rodriguez contributed 2 hits as St. Louis knocked off Florida, 8-1.

Nick Markakis had 3 hits, and
Jay Payton had 2 hits and 2 RBI to lead the Orioles past the Nationals, 7-2. John Patterson allowed one run on 3 hits in 2 innings of work for Washington.

Andy LaRoche had 2 hits, and
Larry Bigbie drove in 2 runs as the Dodgers rallied for 4 in the 9th inning to outscore the Mets, 5-2. Mike Pelfrey started and pitched 2 scoreless innings for New York.


Brandon Wood went 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored, and Ben Johnson drove in 2 runs with a pinch-hit triple to help the Angels slip by the Rockies, 9-8. Luis Salazar went 2-for-2 with a homer and 3 RBI for Colorado in defeat.


Jason Ellison and Todd Linden combined to go 5-for-7 with 6 RBI as the Giants beat the Brewers in another high scoring affair, 12-8. Matt Morris gave up 7 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks in just 1 2/3 innings.

  • Vladimir Guerrero says his knees are fine and he won't have surgery.
  • Bobby Cox is beginning to think about retiring and said Saturday that he might step aside after two more seasons.
  • Colorado slugger Todd Helton was a late scratch from Saturday’s game with a swollen right knee. He's day to day.
  • Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano predicted that he’ll win the National League Cy Young award this season.
  • Jose Castillo was diagnosed with a right foot sprain after he attempted to break up a double play in Pittsburgh's 4-3 loss to the Yankees on Saturday, putting his bid for a starting spot in jeopardy.
  • After struggling in his first start of the spring, Scott Kazmir said his left shoulder felt great and that he was frustrated but not worried by his outing.
  • Desperately in need of a backup shortstop to play behind Jason Bartlett, the Twins acquired Alejandro Machado in December's Rule 5 Draft. But because of Machado's shoulder inflammation, the club has yet to see him in action at Spring Training.
  • The Dodgers have come to terms with every player on the 40-man roster after signing Wilson Betemit, Yhency Brazoban, D.J. Houlton, Andre Ethier, Russell Martin, Wilson Valdez, Eric Stults, Delwyn Young, Mike Megrew, Andy LaRoche, James Loney and Matt Kemp to one-year deals.
  • The Atlanta Braves announced today that they have signed 14 players to one-year contracts and renewed the contracts of two players for the 2007 season. The Braves' entire 40-man roster is now under contract for the upcoming season. Those agreeing to terms include right-handed pitchers Jose Ascanio, Blaine Boyer, Lance Cormier, Kyle Davies, Joey Devine, Anthony Lerew, Peter Moylan and Chad Paronto; left-handed pitchers Chuck James and Macay McBride; and infielders Willy Aybar, Kelly Johnson, Tony Pena and Martin Prado. In addition, the Braves renewed the contracts of outfielder Jeff Francoeur and right-handed pitcher Phil Stockman.
  • The Kansas City Royals have announced that Opening Day on April 2 vs. Boston is officially sold out. This is the best first day of sales for the Royals in over 15 years.
