As most of you know, I happen to have a very good relationship with Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore. Dayton is a class guy and one of the nicest people I’ve EVER met…and I really mean that. I can’t imagine anyone getting upset with him.
That being said, if I don’t agree with something Moore may do, I will certainly voice my opinion. I don’t, however, feel that 10 months on the job is enough for us to judge the new Royals GM. Time will tell whether he gets the job done or not.
Dayton called me on Tuesday and we talked about the latest happenings in Kansas City. Here’s a synopsis of that discussion…
- “When we got here, we knew this would be a challenge,” Moore said when I asked him how tough things were for his 10-23 Royals. “There’s still a lot of work to do.”
- When I suggested that the Royals just ran into a red-hot Tigers team during the past losing streak, Dayton made no excuses. “They’re all good teams. We just haven’t been playing or pitching well.”
- I mentioned to Dayton that it’s exciting to have Billy Butler up in the majors. “He’s really a great kid. We’re happy to have him up with us.”
- We touched on the draft and I asked if he will oversee the selections. “No, Deric (Ladnier) will run the draft. It’s his show. I don’t feel like I should be influencing the selections. We brought in people to support Deric, and we feel we have a quality team in place (to handle the draft).”
“If I start getting involved, they’ll (Deric’s team) try to draft to satisfy me. That’s not fair to them, and it doesn’t help us in player selection. When we were in Atlanta, John (Schuerholz) treated us the same way. He let us do our thing, and we were successful.”
- When I pushed a little about who they might be targeting in the draft, Dayton gave me the expected answer. “Pitching, pitching.” Then he gave me the unexpected answer. “Pitching, pitching AND catching.” Hmmm…I hadn’t heard that before. I don’t want to speculate too much, but could that mean the Royals might be eyeing Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters with the second overall pick?
“In the end, we’ll always look for the player who’ll have the most impact,” Moore concluded.
