Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi announced today that the Mariners have acquired veteran right-handed reliever Jason Davis from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for a player to be named later. 

The Florida Marlins today announced they have acquired right-handed pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim from the Rockies in a trade for right-handed pitcher Jorge Julio. The announcement was made by Marlins Executive Vice President and General Manager Larry Beinfest.

The Minnesota Twins announced prior to today’s game that they have designated Sidney Ponson for assignment.

The New York Mets recalled OF Carlos Gomez from Triple-A New Orleans and optioned RHP Mike Pelfrey to New Orleans.

  • Julio Lugo had 4 hits, and 4 different Boston players contributed 2 RBI apiece as the Red Sox trounced the Orioles, 13-4. Jay Gibbons had 3 hits and 2 doubles for Baltimore.
  • Vernon Wells reached base 3 times, and Adam Lind and Frank Thomas each hit home runs as the Blue Jays slipped by the Devil Rays, 5-4. Carlos Pena reached base 3 times and homered, and Carl Crawford had 2 hits, a home run, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored for Tampa Bay.
  • Bill Hall and Tony Gwynn Jr. each had 3 hits and a walk, and J.J. Hardy hit a grand slam and drove in 5 runs as the Brewers torched Mike Pelfrey and the Mets, 12-3.
  • Orlando Cabrera had 3 hits, an RBI, and scored twice, and Vladimir Guerrero reached base 3 times as the Angels won their 4th in a row, a 6-3 victory over the Rangers. Mark Teixeira had 2 hits, including a 2-run homer, for Texas.
  • Carlos Ruiz doubled, homered, had 3 hits, 3 RBI, and scored twice, and Greg Dobbs went 4-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI as the Phillies outlasted the Cubs, 11-7. Chase Utley also had 2 doubles and a home run for Philadelphia who pounded out 16 hits. Derrek Lee went 4-for-5 with 2 runs scored for Chicago.
  • Craig Monroe went 3-for-4 with a home run, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI, and Magglio Ordonez reached base 4 times and drove in 2 runs to lead the Tigers to an 8-2 thumping of Sidney Ponson and the Twins. Mike Redmond collected 3 hits for Minnesota.
  • Casey Blake reached base 4 times, scored 3 runs, and drove in another, and Jason Michaels had 3 hits as the Indians came back from a 3-run deficit to beat the A’s, 6-3. Fausto Carmona picked up his 4th win of the season. He allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 7 innings.
  • Mike Lamb had 3 hits, a home run, scored 3 times, and drove in 2, and Hunter Pence doubled, homered, had 3 hits, and 3 RBI as the Astros beat up on the Diamondbacks, 10-4. Chris Young had 2 hits and a walk for Arizona. Roy Oswalt picked up the win for Houston and is now 6-2.
  • Chuck James allowed just one hit through 7 scoreless innings, and Scott Thorman hit 2 home runs and drove in 5 as the Braves buried the Pirates, 9-2. Willie Harris had 4 hits, and Jeff Francoeur added 3 more for Atlanta. The victory was the 5th straight for the Braves.
  • Despite 3 hours and 38 minutes of rain delays, the Nationals and Marlins were able to get in tonight’s game and Washington is glad they did. With the game tied in the bottom of the 9th, Ryan Zimmerman crushed a 2-out walk-off grand slam to lift the Nationals over the Marlins, 7-3. Dan Uggla had 3 doubles, and Josh Willingham had 2 doubles and a single for Florida.
  • Juan Uribe had 3 hits, a home run, and drove in the tying run in the bottom of the 9th inning, and Jermaine Dye had 2 hits, including an RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to give the White Sox a 5-4 win over the Royals. Chicago has now won 4 in a row while Kansas City has dropped 3 straight.
  • Jeff Francis allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits over 8 innings, and Matt Holliday hit 2 home runs and drove in 4, as the Rockies rolled to a 6-2 win over Barry Zito and the Giants. Jeff Baker reached base 3 times and homered as well for Colorado.
  • Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, and Hideki Matsui each had 3 hits, and Matt DeSalvo allowed just 2 runs in 6 2/3 innings as the Yankees beat the Mariners, 7-2. Jose Vidro had 3 hits (2 doubles) for Seattle.
  • Braden Looper pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowing just 3 hits while walking one and striking out 7 to pitch the Cardinals to a 5-0 shutout over the Padres. So Taguchi hit a 3-run double that proved to be more than enough offense for St. Louis.
  • Luis Gonzalez had 3 hits, a walk, and scored 3 times, and Brad Penny pitched a solid game for his 5th victory of the year as the Dodgers defeated the Reds, 7-3.
