Delmon Young was the hero for Tampa Bay on Thursday after hitting 2 home runs

 

  • Fausto Carmona pitched a complete game 4-hitter, and Victor Martinez and Ryan Garko hit home runs off of Johan Santana as the Indians shut out the Twins, 2-0. Santana allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and struck out 11 in 7 innings.
  • Julian Tavarez pitched just a little bit better than Zach Minor to lead the Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the Tigers in the opener of Thursday’s doubleheader. Tavarez allowed just one run in 7 innings of work.
  • In the second game, Eric Hinske homered, drove in 2 runs and scored twice to propel the Red Sox to a 5-3 win and a sweep of the doubleheader. Curt Schilling pitched 6 strong innings and allowed just 2 runs.
  • Felipe Lopez doubled, tripled, had 3 hits, walked and drove in a run as the Nationals edged the Braves, 4-3. Chipper Jones homered again for Atlanta in defeat.
  • Down 5-1 in the 9th inning, the Mets rallied for 5 runs to come from behind and stun the Cubs, 6-5. Endy Chavez and Ruben Gotay each reached base 3 times, and Gotay and Carlos Delgado each drove in 2 runs for New York. Angel Pagan had 2 hits, hit a home run, and drove in 2 while Aramis Ramirez launched a big fly and knocked in 3.
  • Jermaine Dye hit a home run and drove in 4, and Jon Garland allowed just one run on 6 hits in 7 innings as the White Sox downed the Yankees, 4-1. Alex Rodriguez reached base 3 times for New York.
  • Livan Hernandez allowed just one run on 4 hits over 7 innings, and he helped his cause at the plate with 2 hits to lead the Diamondbacks to a 3-1 win over the Rockies. Josh Fogg allowed only one unearned run in 7 innings for Colorado.
  • Gabe Gross hit 2 homers and Ben Sheets pitched 7 2/3 strong innings as the Brewers stopped their losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Phillies.
  • Mike Sweeney reached base 4 times, doubled, and scored twice as the Royals beat the A’s yet again, 7-4. Mark Ellis had 3 hits for Oakland.
  • Freddy Sanchez had 2 hits, a double, and drove in a run, and Ronny Paulino had 3 RBI as the Pirates cruised to a 7-2 win over the Marlins. Jeremy Hermida reached base 3 times and drove in a run for Florida.
  • Josh Wilson went 3-for-4, and Delmon Young hit 2 home runs and drove in 5 as the Devil Rays defeated the Rangers, 8-6. Young’s second home run was a 2-run walk-off shot in the 10th inning that gave Tampa Bay the win. Mark Teixeira went 2-for-2 with 3 RBI and 3 walks for Texas in the loss.
  • Tim Lincecum pitched 7 brilliant innings, allowing just one unearned run on 2 hits while striking out 10, and Randy Winn had 3 hits and an RBI as the Giants edged the Astros, 2-1, in 12 innings. Roy Oswalt pitched 7 scoreless innings for Houston.
  • Vladimir Guerrero doubled, homered, scored twice, and drove in 3 runs, and Bartolo Colon ran his record to a perfect 5-0 as the Angels beat the Mariners, 7-3. Reggie Willits had 3 hits and a walk for Los Angeles, and Adrian Beltre and Yuniesky Betancourt each had 3 hits for Seattle
