Only 4 hits overall in nine innings. The slugging took place in the fourth inning. Chris Young hit Derrek Lee, words were exchanged then Lee tried to punch Young he retaliated both players were ejected. Also tossed for their efforts in the brawl were: San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy and Chicago Cubs Batting Coach Gerald Perry.
The plunking may be a result of Alfonso Soriano's show-boating in yesterdays game. Soriano provided a wonderful backwards trot after hitting a home run out of the park off of David Wells. Jake Peavy and several players on the Padres bench took exception of Alfonso's antics. As Chris Young is a control pitcher and Derrek Lee being one of the more productive Cubbies it doesn't take a rocket scientist to determine that the plunking may have been meant to serve as a message.
Hard luck starter Carlos Zambrano took a no-hitter into the eighth inning until Marcus Giles knocked one back to Zambrano to end it with an infield single. Zambrano struck out 6 and walked 5. His shutout and resulting loss was at the hands of Russell Branyan. Branyan sent one into the bleachers for his 5th home run of the season in the ninth inning giving the Padres a 1-0 lead. Trevor Hoffman then put out the fire in the bottom half of the ninth sending North Side fans home on a blustery June day.
