Bronx Bombers versus Amazin' Mets.
On the left coast it’s the freeway series.
The battle of LA wrapped up this weekend in Chavez Ravine, at Dodger Stadium.
Friday --- Derek Lowe on the hill for the Dodgers with Ervin Santana for the Angels. Lowe has had several tough outings his past few starts. He went all the way last Saturday in a 1-0 loss to Toronto at Dodger Stadium, one of his three complete-game losses this year -- including an earlier loss against the Angels in Anaheim. The lack of run support continued with just two runs scored on a couple of Luis Gonzalez singles. The Angels struck for a single by Orlando Cabrera in the first. Chone Figgins singled in the Angels' sixth to keep his hitting streak intact for 14 games; Figgins then stole second on a pitchout. The Angels stranded him there when Cabrera struck out on a nasty sinker. Lowe struck out a career high 11 batters and LA beat LAA 2-1 with the Dodger bullpen finishing the game.
Saturday --- Jered Weaver on the mound for the Halos.
Jason Schmidt for The Dodgers.
Schmidt looked strong pitching four scoreless innings. However, the veteran right-hander looked stiff mechanically. Many of his pitches were lacking the movement fans are used to seeing by Jason Schmidt. Jared Weaver dazzled in comparison allowing just four hits heading into the sixth inning. Two Angels left the game due to injury; Left Fielder Garret Anderson re-aggravated his hip injury making a nice catch in the first. Casey Kotchman left in the seventh due to a concussion. Anderson’s replacement Reggie Willits started the scoring with a single to give the Angels a 2-0 lead. Howie Kendrick then singled him home for an insurance run (3-0). The loss ended a Dodger’s four game winning streak and saw them drop out of first in the National League West.
Sunday --- The rubber game of the series saw an offensive rout by the Angels. Everyone in the lineup hit in the visiting half of the third as LAA took a 4-1 lead. Howie Kendrick and Orlando Cabrera struck for 3 RBI and three base hits a piece. Kelvim Escobar struck out eight Dodgers while walking only 2. Former Philly Randy Wolf tossed 70 pitches through 3 innings for The Dodgers and exited after five innings. When the smoke cleared the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim walked off with a 10-4 victory, winning this year’s Freeway series 5 games to 1.
