August 11, 2007 “Short Stops” Around the League

 

J.D. Drew doubled twice, had 3 hits, and drove in 2, and Josh Beckett allowed just 2 runs in 8 2/3 innings as the Red Sox beat the Orioles, 6-2.

Rick Ankiel went 3-for-4 with 2 home runs, 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored, and
Braden Looper gave up just one run on 4 hits over 6 innings as the Cardinals coasted to a 6-1 win over the Dodgers.


Freddy Sanchez went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, and 5 RBI, and Adam LaRoche had 2 hits, a homer, and 3 RBI to lead the Pirates to a 13-3 blowout win over the Giants.

Norris Hopper had 3 hits, and Jeff Keppinger added 2 hits and 3 RBI as the Reds rallied to knock off the Padres, 8-3.
Marcus Giles had 2 hits, a home run, and 3 RBI for San Diego.


Alex Rodriguez hit 2 home runs and drove in 4, and Jose Molina went 4-for-5 as the Yankees offense continued to roll on its way to demolishing the Indians, 11-2. Mike Mussina yielded 2 runs in 7 2/3 innings to pick up his 8th victory for New York.


Kelly Johnson reached base 4 times, homered, and drove in 3 runs, and Jeff Francoeur had 2 hits, hit a solo home run, and scored twice as the Braves moved back into second place in the NL East by beating the Phillies, 7-5.


Brandon Webb pitched a complete game 5-hit shutout, and Justin Upton tripled and drove in the game’s only run to help the Diamondbacks blank the Nationals, 1-0. Rookie John Lannan allowed just one run on 4 hits in 7 innings for Washington.


Josh Willingham had 3 hits, hit a grand slam, and drove in 5 runs, and Miguel Cabrera reached base 4 times and drove in 2 runs as the Marlins took advantage of an imploding New York bullpen to beat the Mets, 7-5. David Wright went 3-for-4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI for New York.


Raul Ibanez went 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI, and Yuniesky Betancourt hit a grand slam as the Mariners held off the White Sox, 7-6. Josh Fields hit a grand slam of his own and drove in 5 for Chicago.

Alex Gordon went 3-for-3 with a triple and a 2-run home run, and Leo Nunez threw 6 brilliant innings as the Royals downed the Blue Jays, 4-1.


Magglio Ordonez went 3-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI, and Justin Verlander pitched well enough to notch his 12th victory of the season as the Tigers clawed past the A’s, 5-2.


Edwin Jackson tossed a complete game 4-hit shutout, and Delmon Young doubled twice and drove in a run as the Devil Rays defeated the Rangers, 3-0.


Prince Fielder went 3-for-5 and hit his 36th home run of the season, J.J. Hardy contributed 3 hits, and Ryan Braun blasted a 3 run shot to lead the Brewers to 4-9th inning runs on their way to a stunning 7-4 come-from-behind win over the Astros. Wandy Rodriguez pitched 7 strong innings for Houston but didn’t figure in the decision despite leaving the game with the lead.

Troy Tulowitzki went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI,
Brad Hawpe doubled, homered and knocked in 3, and Jamey Carroll hit a grand slam and collected 5 RBI as the Rockies pummeled the Cubs, 15-2. Josh Fogg allowed just 2 runs in 6 innings for Colorado.


John Lackey gave up 2 runs over 8 innings, and Maicer Izturis capped a 4-run 8th inning for Los Angeles with a 2-run home run as the Angels came back to beat the Twins, 4-3. Carlos Silva allowed just 2 hits in 7 scoreless innings, and Joe Mauer had 3 hits for Minnesota in defeat.
