The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms with outfielder Jermaine Dye on a two-year, $22-million contract extension through the 2009 season with a mutual option for 2010.
Under terms of the agreement, Dye will receive $9.5 million in 2008 and $11.5 million in 2009. The mutual option pays Dye $12 million for the 2010 season (or a $1 million buyout).
Dye, 33, has a team-high 24 home runs and has hit .245 (95-388) with 62 RBI in 104 games with the White Sox in 2007. During his 12-year career with Atlanta (1996), Kansas City (1997-2001), Oakland (2001-04) and the White Sox (2005-07), Dye has batted .274 (1,447-5,274) with 260 home runs and 879 RBI in 1,434 games.
A two-time All-Star, Dye has six 100-RBI seasons in his career and eight with 20 or more home runs (including 2007). The 2005 World Series Most Valuable Player enjoyed his best offensive season in 2006 when he hit .315 with a career-high 44 home runs and 120 RBI in finishing fifth in balloting for the American League’s Most Valuable Player Award. His 44 home runs were the second-most in club history. Dye won the first Silver Slugger Award of his career in 2006.
