August 8, 2007 “Short Stops” Around the League
Garrett Atkins went 4-for-4 with 2 doubles and 6 RBI, and Troy Tulowitzki doubled twice, homered, drove in 3 runs, and scored 4 more to lead a 23 hit offensive explosion that saw the Rockies punish the Brewers, 19-4. Yovani Gallardo gave up 11 runs on 12 hits and 3 walks in just 2 2/3 innings for Milwaukee.
Aaron Rowand doubled, homered, and drove in 2 runs, and Jimmy Rollins added 2 hits and 2 RBI as the Phillies beat the Marlins, 6-4.
Jose Vidro went 3-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBI, and Raul Ibanez and Jose Guillen also went deep as the Mariners doubled up the Orioles, 8-4. Nick Markakis had 2 hits and 2 RBI for Baltimore.
Dioner Navarro doubled, homered, had 3 hits, drove in 2 runs, and scored 3 more, and James Shields allowed just one run on 5 hits while striking out 9 over 7 innings to lead the Devil Rays to an easy 7-1 win over the Tigers. Delmon Young also had 3 hits and 2 RBI for Tampa Bay.
Vernon Wells went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, and Frank Thomas went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI as the Blue Jays roughed up the Yankees, 15-4. Robinson Cano hit 2 home runs and drove in 3 for New York.
Luis Castillo had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs to tie the game in the 7th inning, and Moises Alou hit a solo shot in the 8th inning to give New York the lead for good as the Mets edged the Braves, 4-3. Shawn Green went 4-for-4 for New York while Chipper Jones had 2 hits and 2 RBI for Atlanta.
Aaron Harang pitched 8 scoreless innings, and Ken Griffey Jr. drove in the game’s only run as the Reds shut out the Dodgers again, 1-0.
Carlos Lee went 3-for-4, Luke Scott reached base 3 times and drove in 3 runs, and Roy Oswalt threw 6 scoreless innings as the Astros beat up Carlos Zambrano and the Cubs, 8-2. The Astros have won 3 straight while the Cubs have dropped 4 in a row. Ryan Theriot had 3 hits for Chicago.
Michael Cuddyer and Torii Hunter each went 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI, and Johan Santana gave up just 2 runs in 6 innings as the Twins cruised to an 11-4 win over the Royals. John Buck had 3 hits and 2 RBI for Kansas City.
Kip Wells allowed just one unearned run in 7 innings, and Juan Encarnacion and Albert Pujols each drove in a base runner as the Cardinals won a close one over the Padres, 2-1. Greg Maddux pitched 6 solid innings for San Diego in defeat.
Josh Fields reached base 4 times and had 2 doubles, and Juan Uribe tripled and hit a 2-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 13th inning as the White Sox rallied to beat the Indians, 6-4. Jhonny Peralta had 2 hits, homered, and drove in 2 for Cleveland. C.C. Sabathia and Jon Garland each pitched 7 strong innings for their respective clubs.
Rob Bowen homered twice and drove in 3 runs, and the Oakland bullpen pitched 3 near-perfect innings in relief to give the Athletics a 6-3 win over the Rangers.
Barry Bonds homered and drove in 2 runs, and Matt Cain allowed just 3 hits over 6 scoreless innings to propel the Giants to a 5-0 shutout over the Nationals. Cain also hit a solo home run to help his cause.
Chris Snyder doubled, homered, and drove in 4 runs, and Mark Reynolds tripled, had 2 hits, scored twice and drove in 2 as the Diamondbacks held off the Pirates, 10-6. Adam LaRoche went 4-for-5 for Pittsburgh.
Mike Lowell went 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI, and Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 runs scored as the Red Sox avoided the sweep by defeating the Angels, 9-6. Chone Figgins had 2 hits and 3 RBI, and Erick Aybar went 3-for-3 with a walk and 2 stolen bases for Los Angeles.
