J.R. Towles was on fire at the plate on Tuesday

  • Jeff Keppinger had 2 hits, and Ryan Freel drove in 2 runs as the Reds beat Cleveland, 7-4, in a rain shortened game. Andy Marte doubled and drove in 2 for Cleveland.
  • J.R. Towles went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles, a home run, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored, and the Astros pounded out 17 hits en route to an 11-10 win over the Tigers. Placido Polanco and Freddy Guzman each had 3 hits for Detroit, and starter Nate Robertson pitched 3 scoreless innings while striking out 4.
  • John Lindsey reached base 3 times, homered, and drove in 3 runs, and Nomar Garciaparra had 2 hits and scored twice to lead the Dodgers past the Nationals, 5-3, in the first of two split squad games against Washington. Lastings Milledge has 2 hits and 2 RBI for the Nationals.
  • Phil Hughes, Scott Patterson, Kei Igawa, and Billy Traber combined to pitch 5 perfect innings, and Shelley Duncan had 2 hits and drove in a run as the Yankees blanked the Blue Jays, 2-0, in another game called by rain.
  • John Maine allowed one run over 3 innings, and Angel Pagan had 3 hits and 2 RBI as the Mets rallied for 4 runs in the 9th inning to beat the Marlins, 6-2.
  • Jeff Francoeur, Joe Borchard, and Mark Teixeira each drove in 2 runs, and Brent Lillibridge and Martin Prado chipped in 3 hits apiece as the Braves clobbered the Phillies, 10-1.
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched 3 solid innings, and Argenis Diaz had 3 hits and 2 RBI as the Red Sox downed the Pirates, 5-3.
  • Melvin Mora reached base 4 times, doubled, homered, and drove in 4 runs, and Adam Jones and Kevin Millar added 3 hits each to lead the Orioles to a 10-2 blowout of the Cardinals.
  • Nick Swisher doubled twice, walked, and drove in 2 runs, and Paul Konerko went 3-for-3 and scored twice as the White Sox edged the Angels, 7-6. Kendry Morales homered and drove in 3 for Los Angeles.
  • Conor Jackson tripled, homered, and drove in 6 runs, and Justin Upton and Chris Snyder also lauched big flies to help the Diamondbacks overcome a shaky outing by Brandon Webb and defeat the Rangers, 9-3.
  • Joey Gathright tripled, walked, stole 2 bases, and scored twice, and Alberto Callaspo hit a 2-run home run to finally give the Royals some offense and an 11-5 win over the Rockies.
  • Gabe Kapler had 2 hits and 3 RBI, Mike Cameron had 2 hits, a homer, and scored 3 times, and Tony Gwynn Jr. tripled, homered, and knocked in 2 as the Brewers outlasted the Cubs, 10-6, in 10 innings. Kosuke Fukudome went 3-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBI for Chicago.
  • Jack Hannahan hit 2 doubles, and Brooks Conrad and Gregorio Petit each drove in 2 runs as the A's outscored the Mariners, 9-6.
  • Greg Maddux pitched 2 perfect innings, Tadahito Iguchi went 2-for-2, and Paul McAnulty hit his second home run on the month as the Padres roughed up Tim Lincecum and the Giants, 9-6.
  • Ronnie Belliard collected 3 hits, and Luis Jimenez hit 2 home runs as the Nationals split squad squeezed past the Dodgers, 4-3. Hiroki Kuroda threw 2 scoreless innings for Los Angeles, allowing one hit and 2 walks. Also of note for the Dodgers...Clayton Kershaw allowed one run on 3 hits but also struck out 3 in one inning of work.
