Arizona
Randy Johnson - Missed 12 games (back surgery).
His first start this season was not as bad as expected by 'experts': 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K. From the AP:
Johnson, who has 284 wins, gave up three hits and three unearned runs. It took him five pitches to throw his first strike after a four-pitch leadoff walk to Randy Winn. He struck out Rowand on an 83 mph slider, then gave up another four-pitch walk to Durham before retiring Rich Aurilia on a called third strike. Johnson got out of the inning on 18 pitches, eight for strikes.
"When I was in a situation to be able to put a hitter away I was able to do that," Johnson said. "The first couple innings the problem was finding myself in that situation. I was always pitching behind in the count and that's typically not what I do."

He had not pitched in the big leagues since a 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers last June 28, before his August operation.
The 44-year-old left-hander topped out at 93 mph with his fastball. Manager Bob Melvin said beforehand he didn't have a pitch count for Johnson, who went 4-3 with a 3.81 ERA last season. He finished at 90 pitches with 49 strikes.
"All things considered, he got better as he went along. He was frustrated early with his command," Melvin said. "The mound was an issue. It was a joke. It was too high and the slopes were all wrong. Both teams pitched off the same mound and both teams complained about it. Even at the end he was throwing as hard as he was in the first inning. He never lost his velocity."
Johnson underwent surgery to repair a herniated disk each of the past two seasons. Last year, he had only 3 1/2 months to recover before spring training and believes he rushed back too soon. He also had back surgery in 1996.
Jailen Peguero - Optioned to Tucson (AAA).
He was in the bullpen and had to move to make a place to Randy Johnson on the active roster. He pitched three innings, allowed 2 ER, walked none and struck out 3.
Atlanta
Tom Glavine - Hamstring, day-to-day.
He pitched only 11.1 innings in three starts and allowed 13 hits, 3 ER, 6 walks and struck out 6, for a 1.68 WHIP and 2.38 ERA.
Detroit
Placido Polanco - Missed 1 game (back injury).
Carlos Guillen - Missed 2 games (hamstring).
Houston
Humberto Quintero - Contract purchased from Round Rock (AAA).
On the waivers about a week ago, he's now needed by the Astros at the big league level. He only has 3 AB in Triple-A. J.R. Towles was hit by a pitch on his left hand
David Newhan - Designated for assignment by the Houston Astros.
Kansas City
David DeJesus - Missed 11 games (sprained right ankle).
LA (Anaheim)
Torii Hunter - Missed 1 game (toe injury).
Howie Kendrick - Hamstring, day-to-day.
NY Yankees
Derek Jeter - Missed 6 games (quadricep injury).
From the Daily News:
Jeter's first at-bat was a groundout to second base, but when he batted in the third, he hit a ball to the shortstop that he beat out while running at a little less than full speed.
"You have to try to tell yourself (not to go full speed)," Jeter said. "It's more mental than anything; it takes a while before you're going to trust it."
In the fourth, Jeter stepped to the plate with runners at second and third and delivered a two-run single to left that gave the Yankees a 7-1 lead. The bullpen blew a 7-2 lead in the seventh, but Robinson Cano's eighth-inning homer lifted the Yankees to victory.
Although Girardi had wanted to see Jeter run at full speed before putting him back in the lineup, he was satisfied with Jeter's progress after watching him run nine sprints at 80% before Sunday night's game in Boston.
Chad Moeller - Contract purchased from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA).
Joba Chamberlain - Placed on the bereavement list.
Jonathan Albaladejo - Recalled from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA).
He pitched on April 4th and struck out 4 batters in 2.2 IP and allowed only one hit. He can induce ground balls 60% of the time. With this strength and also his ability to not walk a lot of hitters, he figures to be a good arm out of the Yankees bullpen. He projects as a reliever, with mainly his fastball and tight slider to work with.
A little scouting report on him:
As you would expect from the stats, command is Albaladejo's strength. According to Ruby, his main pitches are a fastball (89-91 mph, Ruby said) and a tight slider. He also throws a changeup and a curveball.
"The big thing is command of his offspeed, he throws offspeed behind in the count no problem," Ruby said. ""Slider is his out pitch. Really good command of it, he can throw it in any count."
Ruby also liked Albaladejo's maturity and refered to him constantly as a "good kid."
"He's big and strong," Ruby said. "He'll have to watch his weight and have to stay on his conditioning, but he's a big horse and he's durable."
Albaladejo was a starter through his first four years with the Pirates, and Ruby said he found an extra five mph on his fastball after he was moved to the pen. Ruby said he would project Albaladejo as a middle reliever or set-up man, but not a closer. He also said Albaladejo could go two or three innings if needed, something he did quite a bit in Triple-A last year but never in the big leagues.
"In the pen I think he's got a chance to be a really good big leaguer," Ruby said. "He's not affraid of anybody... One time through the lineup, he'd be excellent."
Wilson Betemit - Pink eye, 15-day DL.
Oakland
Fernando Hernandez - Designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics.
A 23-year-old right-handed pitcher that throws in the 90s, who strikes out a lot of batters and doesn't walk...designated? Yep, he was a Rule V pick. From the drumbeat:
Hernandez must go through waivers and if he clears, he must be offered back to the White Sox, and they can take him back for $25,000 if they choose. A's assistant GM David Forst said if Hernandez clears waivers, Oakland will have some talks with the White Sox, which means the team might be open to swinging a deal with Chicago to keep Hernandez.
Kirk Saarloos - Contract purchased from Sacramento (AAA).
Atrocious numbers overall in his career. He doesn't strikeout much batters and often allows more walks than he fans the opposition. But, he can start, be a long man or even face one or two batters here and there. That's what manger Geren plan to do with him.
Pittsburgh
Freddy Sanchez - Missed 1 game (right shoulder injury).
Adam LaRoche - Missed 1 game (flu).
San Francisco
Aaron Rowand - Missed 1 game (sore ribs).
Seattle
Adrian Beltre - Missed 1 game (hamstring).
Mike Morse - Shoulder injury, 15-day DL.
Eric O'Flaherty - Optioned to West Tenn (AA).
1.56 WHIP and a 5.91 ERA in 70 innings of relief in the majors.
R.A. Dickey - Contract purchased from Tacoma (AAA).
Can't wait to see what he'll do with that knuckleball in the majors this year. He was said to be really effective this season in AAA and the numbers seem to prove it (as a starter - 2 games): 15 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 11 K.
From the Post-Intelligencer:
"There's a possibility we might go with Dickey if Bedard isn't ready to come back," McLaren said.
Whatever the role, Dickey's happy to fill it.
"It was disappointing not to make the team (out of spring training)," he said. "But the Mariners handled it first class, and it's great to be here now."
Dickey spent all spring showing the Mariners he could throw a hard knuckleball with success. During his time at Tacoma, as brief as it was, he's come closer to perfecting a soft knuckler, too.
"The last two starts I've had a chance to throw both of them," he said. "One is 81 (mph), and the other is 68. Both have no spin at all. It's a good combination."
Arthur Rhodes - Contract purchased from Tacoma (AAA).
He's coming back from Tommy John surgery a bit ahead of schedule and he hasn't pitched in the majors since 2006 with the Phillies. He reportedly doesn't throw as hard as he used to, but said he feels great and is ready to be the left-handed pitcher they need after demoting O'Flaherty to give him back confidence.
Texas
Scott Feldman - Optioned to Frisco (AA).
Wes Littleton - Recalled from Oklahoma (AAA).
Toronto
Rod Barajas - Groin, day-to-day.
He was batting .385/.385/.538 in 13 AB (5 games), 11 of them against right-handed pitchers.
