RUSSELL MARTIN | C
Organization: Los Angeles Dodgers
DOB: 2/15/83 | Height: 5-10 | Weight: 210 | Bats: R | Throws: R
Scouting Report
· Offense: Martin has a very selective approach at the plate. He has a short, quick stroke which helps him use the entire field to hit. His power comes when he turns on pitches up and in. Has good speed and shows a fantastic knack for basestealing.
· Defense: Very athletic catcher behind the plate with incredible quickness and agility. Does a great job getting in front of balls in the dirt which his pitchers love. Very aggressive thrower with a strong and accurate arm and a very quick release. This not only helps prevent steals but also keeps runners close. One of the best defensive catchers in all of baseball.
· Overall: For my money, Martin has become the best overall catcher in baseball today. He wants in the lineup every single night and has garnered the respect of his staff incredibly fast. Look for him to represent the National League in the All-Star game for many years to come.

Re: Scouting Snapshot: Russell Martin
Whoa, the best catcher in baseball?
Even in Martin's "career year" he was a substantial amount behind Victor Martinez, the REAL best catcher in baseball. I think top 5 is definitely where he sits right now, but even a repeat of last years numbers would also require Martinez to have a substantial slip in order to be leap-frogged. It depends though whether you take defense into consideration. Martin is a significantly better defender than Victor Martinez. Martinez is also a few years older. You really can't go wrong with either one on your team.

Martin has a ton of potential, and I see him as the best catcher in baseball in a few years. Once he starts to develop and hit his peak, he will be a spectacular catcher. Here is an interesting question between Martin and V-Mart: http://www.rootzoo.com/polls/view/MLB/General/If-you-needed-a-catcher-and-no-one-had-taken-Russel-Martin-or-Victor-Martinez-yet-who-would-you-choose_7439/null
