It came as no surprise today when the Diamondbacks activated Doug Davis from the disabled list today.  Reliever Brandon Medders was designated for assignment and rookie phenom Max Scherzer was taken out of the rotation and moved to the bullpen.

Scherzer made the most of his opportunity while Davis was sent to the DL after surgery to treat thyroid cancer on April 10.  He retired the first 13 batters he faced and went 0-2 in three starts despite posting a 3.00 ERA in 15 innings of work.  Overall, Scherzer is 0-2 with a 2.33 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.

The news was not good for Medders who is out of Minor League options.  Arizona now has 10 days to trade, waive or release him.  In his 18 appearances, Medders was 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA.

Arizona's eighth round pick in 2001, this was Medders' eighth year in the Diamondback organization and 4th season with the major league club.  The 28-year old right-hander was 11-6 with a 3.52 ERA in 135 games.
