View Article  News & Notes: Izzy returns in St. Louis, Braves' Soriano to DL and Dodgers' Penny in pain

Following their 20-2 loss to the Phillies on Friday night, the St. Louis Cardinals added two relievers including closer Jason Isringhausen -- activated from the 15-day disabled list -- to provide some fresh arms to their depleted bullpen that turned to infielder Aaron Miles at the end of Friday's blowout.  The Cardinals also added reliever Anthony Reyes and sent down reliever Mark Worrell and outfielder Joe Mather to Triple-A Memphis.

Isringhausen will not resume his role of closer immediately and will start by pitching the middle to late innings while Ryan Franklin continues at the closer role.  Isringhausen worked on his mechanics and his mental state while completing his rehab assignment and received helpful advice from pitchers Chris Carpenter and Josh Kinney during his assignment.

When Isringhausen returns to the closer spot, he will continue his pursuit of 300 career saves.  The Cardinals reliever is 22nd on the All-Time Saves list with 292 and needs just eight more to reach the milestone.

Reyes gives the Cardinals an additional long reliever out of the bullpen replacing Mark Worrell who struggled in his short stay with the club.  For Reyes, it is a return to the Major League roster where he made nine appearances and went 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA earlier this season.

Waiting has not paid off for the Atlanta Braves.  In need of opening a roster spot for Charlie Morton to make his first Major League start, the Braves finally gave up on waiting for reliever Rafael Soriano to become healthy enough to pitch and placed him on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 6 -- the day after his last appearance.  The decision was similar to one the team needed to make on Mark Kotsay who failed to recover from back problems despite the Braves giving him about a week to recover before placing him on the DL.

Soriano spent six weeks on the DL earlier this season before returning on May 28 and made five appearances between May 28-June 5.  In those five appearances, Soriano notched two saves and posted a 1.80 ERA in five innings of work.  After his last appearance, Soriano experienced a recurrence of elbow discomfort that he has suffered from since spring training and was made unavailable on a daily basis due to the discomfort.

Officially, Soriano, 28, was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to right elbow inflammation and is eligible to return from the DL as soon as Saturday during the Braves series with Soriano's former team, the Mariners.

Most expected Brad Penny to be the ace of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff this season.  His latest outing against the Tigers where he gave up seven runs on seven hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings en route to his seventh consecutive losing decision also saw Penny's shoulder discomfort worsen.  On Sunday, Penny is expected to return back to Los Angeles and have an MRI on the same right shoulder that has been bothering him for over a month.

Penny experienced pain during pre-game warm-ups but did not tell manager Joe Torre because he knew how depleted the team's bullpen was due to Chan Ho Park nursing his own shoulder ailment.

Torre's first season as manager of the Dodgers has seen the manager dealing with new injuries on an almost daily basis with Penny added to a list of injured players that currently includes Rafael Furcal, Andruw Jones, Gary Bennett, Nomar Garciaparra, Tony Abreu and Jason Schmidt.  If Penny needs to miss a start, the Dodgers have spot starter Hong-Chih Kuo available.  If Penny needs to go on the DL, the Dodgers would most likely recall a starting pitcher from Triple-A to take his spot or strategically use upcoming off days on June 16 and June 23 to work around Penny's injury.
