Baseball Digest Daily :: Schill Done

"Curt Schilling told WEEI's Dennis & Callahan Show this morning that he will have season ending surgery on Monday." The 41 year-old will hang them up this season and it looks unlikely as though Schilling will pitch again.

WEEI promises to provide the audio clip when it becomes available, so we'll be keeping an eye out for that. In the meantime, here are two articles pertaining to Schilling's shoulder from Spring Training. One from Curt himself, the other from MLB.com citing Terry Francona.

WEEI reports that the surgery is classified as major and if he were to return to baseball, it wouldn't be until after the 2009 All-Star Break.

It's a shame that he can't be an integral part of a team that's similarly poised to win another World Series this season.

I think it's also a shame that so many people dislike him for being outspoken and honest. He's truly been one of the great competitors in the 1990's and 2000's.

Do you think Schill is a Hall of Famer, Brandon? I'm biased, but I hope he is. He's really on the fringe, though.

Do I think he is a HOFer? Yes. Do I think he will get into the Hall? I'd say the odds are more against it then they are for it.

Reason being, he doesn't have the premier numbers, those flashy win totals, that HOF voters prefer. The World Series' will definitely help, but I worry that the lack of wins may hurt his cause.
