Well it's certainly not Iowa so I guess it must be heaven!
I had the opportunity to visit the MLB All-Star FanFest today at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. I took my two boys, Daniel (9 years-old) and Tyler (5 years-old) and we spent about 5 hours basking in the glow of baseball!
Whether we were shagging fly balls at Wilson Fielding Practice, strolling through the Negro Leagues exhibit, or watching the MLB.com crew live on the air, baseball really was a constant reminder of everything that is good. From the minute they walked into the convention center until the time they went to sleep tonight, Daniel and Tyler talked about how wonderful this day was and how "cool" all the baseball "stuff" was.
Tyler couldn't wait to hit at the rookie league batting cages while Daniel was amazed by the memorabilia on display. My 5 year-old was oh so ready to dial up his 27 mph heater at the Strikeout Prostate Cancer pitch clocking exhibit while my 9 year-old wanted to have his picture taken while he went "over the wall" to make the game saving catch.
Nothing was going to get in the way of having fun today. I've never seen my boys smile and laugh and beam with pure joy like they did for 5 hours on this Friday afternoon. And all this because of baseball.
Major League Baseball sure does know how to put on a show, and this is just the start. Four more days of All-Star festivities await us. Four more days of baseball bliss for the kid in us all. And at least four more days to remind us of all that is good...
